I'm looking to replace the stock speakers in my 2001 DII (non-HK sound system) and can't find any info on the speakers. Anybody know the sizes of the front and rear door speakers or the pillar tweeters? What about the mounting depth. It looks like they may be 6.5" speakers in both doors. Will most 6.5 inch speakers mount in the factory holes, or will an adapter be required?

I'm also looking to install an amp to run the 6 speakers, but I don't want to change the factory head unit (would like to keep the steering wheel functions.) Does the factory head unit have RCA preamp outputs, or would I have to use the high level inputs on the amp? Does the Harmon Kardon factory head unit have RCA outputs, and will it work in my Disco, if I can find one?

Thanks for looking.

Either high level inputs or use a Hi-Low level converter.

I tried crutchfield before asking here. They don't have info on the Disco II.

That head unit looks just like the one already in my disco. Does the HK system use the same Alpine unit the non-HK system uses?

AF pilot.
I am pretty sure that most if not all 6.5" component speakers will fit in the factory hole. I am looking into doing the same thing in my 01 Disco. I don't have the HK system but I am looking to improve the quality of sound. Infinity have always had good mids and component speakers

Yes they are 6.5. I'm building a system for mine as well. Does the Discovery II's all have 3-ways in the front? I'm looking at getting the Dynaudio System 340 3-way set up. There on the expensive side but they sound awesome. Are any of you going to be running amps and if you are, where are you guy's going to mount them? I think I'll be mounting all my equipment on the back door, and molded onto or into the front doors.

darkknight... I am pondering that same thing. I see that there are limited places for an amp install. I was thinking of just using one amp to run all the doors, mids at least. Not sure if I want to do just mids of 3way speakers either. Isn't there better sound range if you go with a component set than a 3 way, as far as mid range bass and such? Do you know of any sub replacements for the back door (cargo area)?????

The regular componants compared to a 3-way is really one of those things that comes down to taste. I like the 3-way sound but I've heard them. The thing some people don't like with a 3-way setup is that they tend to be a little to bassy... but I honestly think its how its tuned and installed. Plus most useful 3-way set ups cost quite a bit. Like the set up from either Dynaudio or B.A. both cost at least $700 for one set... So I my or may not get them... Not sure if I want to spend $2100 on speakers ;)

What type of music do you listen to? and how do you have it setup now? do you have the bass and trebile tuned up, in the middle, more flat, more bassy?

As for subs you can look at Focal 5WS Subwoofers. Their small enough to fit in the back door area with a little love ;)

As for music I listen to a little of everything, when by myself I listen to we'll say Rock/emo/screamo... a little hip hop, when my wife is in the truck it is the local pop music station. I have the factory set up non H/K. I have the treb all the way up and the bass at 3 I believe maybe 4. I just want a solid sound. I am thinking that i am going to leave the highs that are in there and just replace the door 6.5's. I just want a better all around sound. I have a guy here that did all my A/V install work in my old vehicle so he can give me a decent price on audiobahn stuff, but I am told that JL components are well improved from before, and of course I like the sound of Infinity so I am sot sure what to go with, and I really don't want to spend a lot of money on the stereo, I have done that too many times to mention, my last car was redone 3 times, it gets expensive so if I stay away from doing that the better, haha

Here's the skinny on the speaker sizes....

Front: 6.5" not all will fit...Some cutting will be required and the depth is a maximum of 3.5".

2" Midranges & up to 1" tweeter.

Back: 6.5" same as above & 2 " midrange

Subwoofer: 6" JL Audio makes a great replacement that fits perfectly including the depth.

And guys dont forget PAX makes a universal steering remote that works great with your steering wheel controls.

Good Luck...OH and do not try to do this install by yourself.

Why not? What could be so hard about it. Seems pretty straight forward to me ;)

I think he ment that the mounting depth for the 6.5" speaker is 3.5" and the mid range is a 2" speaker
