I am an independent mechanic and thought it would be a good idea to purchase this 2002 Discovery 2 from the auction. It has 82,000 miles.

Engine cranks but doesn't start. I have replaced the Crank Sensor, checked for fuel at the injector rail, checked for spark, and even tested compression on both banks.

I've read a whole lot of forum posts to try and resolve this, but now I'm reaching out to the pros (Looking at you DiscoMike).

Snap on scanner shows no codes. Installed new battery and kept the voltage at 13.5.

I went to the junkyard and purchased a cluster, BCM, ECM, and Interior Fuse Box. I swapped the cluster and modules out and cleared any codes and tried to fire it up, nothing. It cranks, and there is still spark and fuel, but it just won't happen. I swapped the interior fuse box after and still got nothing.

What am I missing on this thing? I put a jumper in the inertia switch connector too just to rule it out.

If you swap either the BCU or the ECM you have to make the ECM learn the security code and i doubt that a generic scanner can do that cos it's not in the OBDII protocol but each module has to be programmed directly. Missing that the engine will crank but not fire. Maybe first time the passive immobiliser was tripped and that was the reason of non starting and that's the result of not unlocking the vehicle with a programmed fob... IMO you'll not be able to fix this without using a dedicated diagnostic tool which can make the ECM learn the security code

you need atester with these functions(copied from Nanocom EVO guide)

BOSCH MOTRONIC M5.2.1 - Diagnostic Capabilities (UTILITY)

· Discovery Security Learn: This function forces theMotronic ECU to learn the incoming
code from the BCU in a Discovery Series II as its correct mobilization code.
· Reset adaptive values: The adaptive values should be reset if any of the following
components have been renewed or rectified: fuel injector, lambda sensor, fuel pump,
fuel rail,MAFS, inlet manifold, after fixing an air leak or if a new ECU was fitted.

You mentioned you replaced the crank position sensor. Make sure the wires to it are fully seated and connected.
When I replaced my CPS the Disco it continued to only cranked over and not started. I thought I had a brand new bad CPS but found the connections weren't fully seated together in the plug.

I have a snap on scanner, I did learn the EKA code into both modules, but there wasnt an option to reset adaptations. I will have to look when I get back to it tomorrow. I swapped the crank sensor out for ANOTHER crank sensor just to be sure I didn't receive a defective one. This was also a thought of mine. Keep you posted on the adaptations. You would think that the immobilizer in the Motronic would cause a no crank instead of no spark.

The security code is not the EKA code, it has nothing to do with it... the EKA code is stored in the BCU and has to do with the key entry sequence while what i said is an engine ECU(BOSCH MOTRONIC M5.2.1) setting ... it's clearely described in my previous post if you read what the "Discovery security learn" means

You would think that the immobilizer in the Motronic would cause a no crank instead of no spark.
The no crank is caused by the BCU immobiliser if the alarm was triggered for some reason on the locked vehicle, then the starting circuit is disabled too, the engine immobiliser due to the wrong/unreceived security code on the unlocked vehicle is crank but no fire cos the starter is not linked to the motronic ECU.

Looks like my autel won't do the programming. There was live data but no special functions in my menu. Oh well....
I dove in and ordered a Hawkeye Pro from across the pond, looks like it should be here early next week. Just have to wait and see now.

Too bad for you cos hawkeye can't make the motronic ECU learn the security code.... you should have bought Nanocom Evo cos it seems it's the only ''smart'' one...or eventually Foxwell which is half the price of Hawkeye and smarter

A few days too late and a dollar too short. I wish I would've read your post before. I received my Hawkeye and was so eager to try it this morning. As you said, the Hawkeye does NOT do this security programming. I am looking for a distributor for the Nanocom that is US based so I can get this rolling. I only see the official distributor and it will set me further back. If anyone has an evo they would be willing to lend me, I will pay them the full price of the tool through paypal or however they'd like for someone to overnight it to me as a deposit until I return it to them. If I can't find anything local I'm just going to dive in and buy a whole unit.

Do you know anything about the iLand Scan tool from Roverparts.com? I just ordered that tool and then came across this thread. I am new to the Rover world.

Looks promising with a lot of features. I would look in to that for a DIYer, but I went with the Nanocom because it was recommended and the vehicle tokens are cheaper. About 65 bucks to add a different model land rover to the tool, vs 199 to add another vehicle to the iLand. AFAIK the iLand tool is the North American version of the one which in Europe is called Lynx EVO(made by the same manufacturer with same software) and all the users i know are unpleased with it, they say that the menus are human unfriendly, the soft is full of bugs and can kill your nervs also the tech support is useless.

What do you mean nothing changed? did you check the status after that and it tells you that the engine is immobilised or how cos in that video i can't see a message which says the procedure failed... you can enter in the Valeo BCU settings to see the EKA code then insert it with the key and if the engine doesnt start after that the problem is elswhere not with the security code...or you can set the alarm to "not fitted" and disabe the passive immobiliser then if it doesnt start you have to chase other probems not something security related

or if you have a spare BCU put that in

I have what seems like the same issue. I replaced the CPS (Crank Position Sensor) and then The TPS (Throttle position Sensor) It stared but ran ruff and had no power for a day of two now will start but will not stay idle and dies out. If I push on the gas peddle it just dies. I Put a new throttle body heater on at the same time as the CPS. I cleaned the throttle body with break cleaner and I guess ruined the TPS so i got a new one and still same issue. I was told and read here that the truck need to relearn the TPS again....Is that True? So I bought a iCarsoft LR v2.0 and it will not reset the ETC on my 2004 Disco 2 but will 2005 and up. GRRR Does anyone know what one will reset my TPS? Nanocom or Hawkeye Pro? Any help would be awesome as i need to get this old Disco going. I did a lot of work on her and this is the last thing to get done. FYI I get now eeror codes but the O2 Bank 1 and 2. I need to Y pipe and O2 sensors but need to get this running before I do that!

The TPS is plug and play no need for any programming, it's explained in post #2 when you need reset.

Well any thoughts is to why It will crank and start but not stay idle? I thought it was in "Limp mode" but I do not see any flashing lights or error codes. When it is running i push on the gas peddle and just dies. Anything would help been this way for months now.
