Until last May this motor was running fine. Since then it has never been out of the garage and has my regular garage and local dealership stumped for an answer. One trip can be fine, great acceleration and smooth. Next trip and its shudder shudder, blowing black smoke, cutting out at the lights, no acceleration and don't even think of a hard lock "U" turn. Next trip is OK. Garage mechanics must be lucky. they have changed everything (everything) but have never had the same problems. Almost came to blows. Tried high octane and that seemed to be OK then on the next trip...

The list is long

It is registered 1999. Persian Gulf specification. Fuel pump and air sensor unit replaced permanently but parts from another 99 were temporarily swapped, including the computer, with no change to behaviour (sometime good, mostly not so good).

If your saying that you changed the computer, was it re-tuned to suit your vehicle? If not, I'd bet that's where your problem is. Although you replaced yours with the same year model, no two engines are alike.

Tuning the computer?

Can the computer go out of tune just like that? I am trying to think what the garage might have done last May that was so drastic. Also as it runs well sometimes - does that fit with an untuned computer? Starting her up is like Russian Roulette, will she be OK down the road or wont she? Major poo-poos at the moment, today and yesterday. In fact wife was driving when it stalled several times this morning with the kids in the car and I am off to resecue her in my 1995 Mark 1. Please keep the ideas coming. I am sure somewhere, out there, is the truth.

Hey mate, mine does the very same and to make matters worse im selling to buy a later spec one this friday... Mine is a 1993 and black smokes when I hit the gas hard, sometimes stallllllllls and splutters, quick blast and it tends to clear but hey, my guess is its the injectors that are not the best. Would be good if anybody has had a similar issue that they fixed!!!!

if the engines stock then it won't matter about tuning, any 'correct' ECU will be fine. It's not as if LR actually dyno tunes them as they leave the factory.

Unless it's a diesel black smoke could often indicate too much fuel. So this may be a fueling issue.

Is there any continuity from when it is ok to when it isn't? Such as how much fuel is in the tank? Engine temps, outside temp/humidty, is it raining?

If you can collect some info on when it is or isn't ok then it may help point at the problem.

Have you ever run out of fuel in it? If so then you may have sucked up some crap from the bottom of the tank which is now causing poor fueling.

you said trying a U turn is a no no, does that mean it's worse when cornering? That could indicate a fuel pickup problem or a connector that flops about and breaks contact at times.

I assume you've tried all the regular service items such as plugs, leads, filters, etc.

Is it fowling any of the plugs?

Will it idle ok? If it doesn't try an establish which cylinders are miss firing. You can pull the HT leads off one at a time if it causes a miss fire then it's probably not that cylinder, if it doesn't then there's an issue.

Is the motor burning oil or water?

How many miles has it done?

Basically just try and check as much as you can, such as fuel lines, fuel pump, injectors.

If the fault is intermitent then it most likley isn't anything major it's just diagnosing it is a pain.

Your not running on LPG are you?

Well mine dont burn a drop of oil at all, blows black smoke from cold right upto warm, more-so when you "blip" the gas hard. When running at a constant speed/rpm no smoke, its just when you the hit the gas on kick-down. I Just put an injector cleaner in but its not doing much!!! Any Idle is up & down but its a guess its over fueling. Going to remove the air intake/filter in the morning to see if its this but really feel im grabbing at straws here.......
