Ok - I have seen various threads that kinda sorta touch on this but nothing that helps or maybe I don't have access to those boards.

I just got this DSII and it has the original standard stereo. Amps and speakers I know you can pay to replace those **I know nothing about doing it myself and don't plan on trying **.

But the stereo itself seems like I could fix something more than just a standard replacement and I don't want removable. Just wondering for those that HAVE replaced the stereo, any tips on what you chose etc.?

Also -- I hate not having back-up sensors like I had in my LR3 before this. Anyone know if they could be installed without replacing the entire bumper?

Ok thanks

Are you talking about replacing the head unit with an aftermarket, or replacing with a factory unit? If you are replacing with an aftermarket, I can tell you what you need. I replaced mine with a Pioneer and still utilize the factory amp and speakers. Need to know if you have the standard, high-line or the HK system.

As far as the rear bumper and the back up sensors are concerned, it would be somewhat entailed to reverse install the set up. The bumper cover has the cutouts for the sensors. The unit that reads the sensors and creates the audible warning is located on the back left floor below the tail light. It then has wiring up to the instrument bezel with a switch for turning the system on and off. I have all the individual parts but you'd have to create the harness from the unit in the rear to the switch up front. Not a huge deal but somewhat involved.

Hi - it's definitely just stock. Not premium, no nav. See pic.
The difference between the standard and the high-line, is the high-line has an amp under the drivers seat, mid range in the doors(in addition to the subs in the doors) and the two subs in the rear hatch door, tweeters in the a-pillar, rear head-phone controls behind the back seats above the rear wheel well, and also a 6 cdchanger under the drivers seat.
Not sure about the standard, but high-line also has 2 separate amplified antennas(one is FM only and the other is AM/FM.)
The HK(Harmon/Kardon) has all the high-line items, but has HK speakers and HK amp. And all the speakers have "Harmon Kardon" on the speaker grills.

I basically started out with the same setup you have. Everything worked as designed, except my two subs in the rear hatch door had apparently been deteriorated for some time.
I wanted an up to date sound system, that incorporated Bluetooth, Back up camera, and as many inputs as possible and it had to have audio/video input and output.
I went with a Pioneer AVH4000NEX DVD Head unit(which is a 2-din, 7" screen), 2 USB ports, SDCard, 2 Aux ports, back-up camera input and hdmi input.
FYI-For this to work, you have to modify your center dash fascia to accept the 2-din size.
After overcoming the fitment obstacle, I had to research the wiring diagram of the factory harness, to correctly hook up to the head unit.(metra makes the harness adapter, PAC makes the steering wheel control module, mobile-emotions.com makes the diversity antenna adapter) I got the pioneer harness and hooked the wires up to the harness adapter and steering wheel control module and it was good to go.
I removed the CDChanger from under the passenger seat and installed a mono-bloc amp, and added a 10" Pioneer compact sub in the rear cargo area. I got 2 6" Alpine speakers and replaced the two bad ones in the rear hatch door.
I then installed 2- 7"headrest monitors(for my 4 and 5 year old girls) along with a video splitter beside the mono bloc amp under the passenger seat.
On 1 of the USB ports, I have Iphone6 cord(routed to center console where iPhone mount is) hooked up, and on the other USB port is a 480GB solid state hard drive with around 400 ripped dvd's. On the SDCard slot is a 256 GB card with around 15000 songs ripped in FLAC lossless format, and MP3 format. On the A/V input(RCA connectors), I have a digital TVTuner hooked up. The hdmi input is used when I want to hook up my iPhone using the Apple A/V adapter and watch Youtube videos on the screen.
So I ended up with a complete Media center that will play darn near anything.
I also have the Pioneer navigation add-on module made for this head unit, so I do have navigation also, and have the SiriusXM module connected, but I deactivated my account because I never listened to it.

Holy wow!! Are you for hire? What a write up, thank you. And all the photos - so so helpful. You really did a lot, not to mention the screens in the headrests! Going to process it all and figure out my next steps. I can't do the work myself so I'm relegated to researching car audio installers in LA. May have more questions ... :)

No matter what brand you install you will need these things(to keep from cutting and slicing factory wiring). I do suggest that you go with a head unit that has line level outputs(RCA plugs for front, rear and sub woofer), because this makes it easy to utilize the factory amp and speakers. If your head unit only has speaker wires, you will have to get a convertor(converts speaker level to line level output), otherwise you will have all kind of distortion. That is because the head units(not your factory head unit) have their own amp built in and you do not want to send an amplified signal to your factory amp. It is always a good idea to get one with a sub output(in case you want to add a sub in the future)

If you put in a single din head unit, you will want this to fill in the gap left below the head unit.

Note: No matter what head unit you install, your cdchanger will be useless.
