The first number "5W" is the viscosity when the oil is cold. The second number 30 or 40 is the viscosity it acts like when hot. So the higher the second number the better it will operate when the engine runs hotter in hotter climates or working it hard. So go for the first number that the manufacturer specifies and then go for the oil that has the highest second number that still has the required first number. I think the best you will find is 5w40.
