Hi everyone,
Hoping you might lend some insight. We are told by our dealer and a LR mechanic (separate shop) that our LR4 engine needs to be replaced.
We are told the cost for a new engine would be approximately US$33,000.00 and a used engine/rebuilt would be just US$6,000.00 less.

In your experiences, what are your thoughts for engine replacement costs?

While I did not go through with it, the local LR dealership quoted me $12,000 for a used engine (sadly no mention of condition, but one would assume something that has a decent bit of life left) when I had blown head gaskets. That price however sounds like a "we're not interested in the job" price, considering you can buy an entire spare LR4 for a fraction of that price (and you'll have plenty of spare parts).

Thank you for your insight and sharing your experience. Very helpful. I’ve found the same dealer spirit in the pricing we’ve received, and most repairs/recommending full replacement. Good to know we aren’t alone, I suppose.

This is where a good healthy relationship with a local independent mechanic is key, unfortunately that gene pool is getting smaller by the day. Wish I had better news for you. What prompted a requirement for a new engine? Maybe it's something repairable versus a completely toasted engine.

There’s some rebuilt engines being sold out there in the $10k range. Did you have a good shop for install? That would be key, or I’d take it somewhere that can do it even if I have to tow out of state.

curious what you ended up doing.

Well, after multiple groups looking it it, the engine was not bad, as told. So we had some basic work done and things seem good now.
hard to say why multiple shops have such differing opinions, yet dealer, unfortunately didn’t offer any commentary except just a full replacement. Disappointing that the dealer network doesn’t nurture these vehicles as they should—always looking for the quick, easy, high $ fix. Thanks for your comments.

Hello I’m having the same issue. My LR4 2010 was originally suppose to get a water pump and the coolant system repaired. After they started the repair they said that it needs an engine. So I would like some insight on getting it repaired. I wanted to sale it but I have a loan balance and probably want get enough to cover most of my balance.

2016 LR4 warning light came on. Pulled over; smoking under hood. The coolant dumped. Left it at Landrover Dealership in Hoover, AL. We are from out of town. Superviser told us that we need a new engine. 80k miles on it. The coolant system on these Landrovers engines seem to be a problem for many owners on SEVERAL Landrover forums. We were told that Landrover engines are having the issues; wasn’t a problem when Landrover was using Jaguar engines up until 2014.
Quoted $21000 from the dealership
Love LRs. Our 3rd and probably last. Extremely disappointed.

This just happened to us yesterday in our LR4 2016- the dealer getting everything checked over for our kiddos 10 or 12 days ago. Everything was great sent it home. Kids drove it for a few days and it overheated on the side of the road yesterday and the local mechanic said the engine is cooked. I’m sick or 2013 is perfect.

Not the best dealership, lotta people don't care for them - You can try to get it into Duffy's Garage for a second opinion or quote.

I am currently in the same position. I have a 2014 LR4 HSE in great condition. Last week while driving engine surged and drove straight to shop to be total the super-charger over boosted and now I need a new engine. So I am weighing the optoins of repairing with a re-man engine or selling it. This is my 2nd LR and I love this car but i just feel defeated!

Any help would be great!
