The V6 has issues with the timing chain cassettes both stretching, and the guides failing. Do a search for "Ford Explorer 4.0 SOHC timing chain issues", same engine, and was in a lot more Explorers then LR3s.
The only fix is to replace them, one on each bank. The engine needs to be removed, and the bank 1 cylinder head needs to come off.
With it already throwing the code, the timing is already off, which means the chain has jumped teeth. If it gets any worse, internal engine damage will occur.
