RAV says the seal is pre-greased but the seal I got from BPOU appears to be dry. Will a smear of assembly lube or some standard synthetic auto grease be sufficient on the outside of the seal before pressing in? The RAV also says to use Retinax LX grease to the inside of the seal (crank running surface). Same question hear. Will assembly lube for standard sythetic grease be sufficient?

Next challenge is pressing in the seal without the land rover tool. My thought is to gently tap the seal in using a rubber mallet. Or, use a 2x4 to place on the top of the seal to hammer on. I'm thinking the 2x4 would place even pressure all the way around and essentially do the same thing as the tool.

Thanks!!:drink1:

I found a washer the exact same size, just pressed it in, super easy. I bought the one from bputah as well, they use a thinner lubricant than assembly lube and most grease, mine looked like new rubber. I didn't put anything on mine, it just went in. How can you tell it looks dry? It sounds stupid, but mine just looked like new rubber, but my mechanic ensured me it was greased. The very same guy who dropped my car off the jack.... Hmmmmmmmm. It still holds oil though, so I have no worries.

Also, I've learned this... Roverparts.com > bputah.com
I used to think they were better because mike referred me to them, but they don't always have all items in stock and they take forever to ship unless you call and mention DiscoMike, while roverparts will ship products immediately, cheaper, and always will tell you if they are in stock or not on the site, and alot more options to choose from for other parts.

I use Hylomar on the OD of shaft seals, if they aren't rubber.
On the ID any grease or oil is ok. I generally use Lubriplate assembly lube on ones that are in a oil environment, like the crank seal.
