Well, my brand new to me 03 D2 was clunking from the front drive line when I let off the gas, so I figured the U-Joints were shot. Bought new ones, went to put them in tonight, but someone beat me to it at some point. Anyways, the u-joints are fine, no play, easy free movement with no binding or issues. However, I can rotate the input plate on the front differential almost an eighth of a turn before it takes up slack with a metallic clank, exactly like what I hear when I'm driving. So, I suspect my front differential. Is there any way to check the lash without removing the differential? From my experience with D1s, I don't think so...
Planning on pulling it apart Monday, hoping it lasts until then. Got stuck working this weekend. How much play is normal in these differentials? What are the common failure points?
