Hey Everybody. I need help identifying this problem.
When driving (any speed) if I release gas pedal I'm getting mild grinding vibrations coming from the drive train or front end. Once gas pedal is pressed it disappears. Sounds like bad bearing kind of. I think I also get some kind of "drag" - car doesn't roll as freely as it used to when releasing the gas.
2002 Discovery 2 with 145000 miles on it.
Thanks in advance

If you have not re-built or replaced your front drive-shaft, stop driving it NOW! It is letting you that it is going to explode and tear up the underside of your truck. Be warned.

Thanks for the tip but I just rebuilt it few months ago. This is different issue.
Remove the front drive-shaft and see if the noise remains. Even though it sounds like it's coming from the front, you want to be sure.
If it's not the drive-shaft, AND it's from the front, your looking at a TC output bearing or pinion bearing possibly going bad.

I'll do that this weekend. Going to replace shock absorbers anyways so I'll have it lifted. I'll report back. Thanks.

do a search. maybe you get lucky and have a very early 02 and it has the nipple on the transfer case and you can lock it manually from under the truck.

I had the same problem about 6 months ago, my problem was broken gear teeth in the transfer case.

Well, I had it lifted yesterday at my mechanic place and it looks like the TC is grinding and leaking a bit. The squeaking is front output shaft bearing. The grinding comes from the TC itself... looks like I need new TC. Probably cheaper than fixing it.

Is there any good source I can get rebuilt or used TC? Also, Do I have to use TC from same year (2002) or I can go with any series II?

Get a transfer case and shifter off of a 2004 at a salvage yard. You must upgrade to CDL, but you already knew as much. If you get on discoweb, a member is selling CDL equipped TCs for $200 including shipping. You can't beat that
