My headliner on my 99 Disco II is starting to sag over the front passenger side it's not bad yet but is there a way to fix the problem before it gets worse? The sun roof doesn't appear too be leaking. Thank you ----- Cody

Cody, The only way to resolve this problem is to totally remove and replace the Headliner
Material on your Headliner Board.

Here are some of the Do it Your Self Remedies other have tried such as:

#1 - spraying contact cement behind the cloth
#2 - Injecting the Headliner Material with a syringe & Adhesive
#3 - Thumb Tacks
#4 - Rhino Liner
#5 - Garage Floor Paint

In your case of wanting to slow down the problem at the front windshield would be to use #3 Thumb Tacks, they will do the least amount of damage to your Headliner Board and will help hold up the headliner material from getting wind in behind and causing the material from coming down faster.

The only thing the Thumb Tacks will hurt will be your Pride!

I can Teach you how to Remove and Replace your Headliner Material and Water Test your Vehicle for water Leaks before re-installing your Newly Recovered Headliner Board.

Let me know how i can help in any way. Bill

Bill,

Hope this post finds you doing well. Not sure if you remember me but we spoke back before New Years about my Disco II leaks and headliner. I am here in South Florida if that rings a bell. Anyway, lets talk soon so we can figure out the best way to proceed.

Forum members,

Bill is the real deal when it comes to sunroofs and headliners. Very knowledgeable and on the up and up....

Is there any way to do a headliner in a material or surfacing that is permanent? Like fiberglassing it or coating it with something other than temporary fabric? I'm done doing/redoing headliners in the Discovery and can't believe there isn't a better way.....

Bill, I'm looking at buy a Disco 1. It needs a new headliner, what is a good "ballpark" price to pay to have it done? I'm capable, but don't have the time to tackle that job right now.

Thanks!

Hi all,

I figured this would be a good thread to post this question to:

I am reinstalling my sunroofs after taking them out for cleaning. I noticed that when taking them off the Disco the upper tray was pretty-well glued/sealed to the top. Should I be refitting them with some sort of sealant (e.g., silicone)?

Jon

Hi Bill,

After speaking with you the other day I went-out and bought some Permatex high-heat silicone. Since I wasn't sure which to buy, and remembering that you said to make sure it was high heat and stays flexible, I got the one that said "remains flexible" on the front of the packaging (Permatex® High-Temp Red RTV Silicone Gasket). Unfortunately, it is red and there are a few spots where red silicone oozed-out (not a big deal). I water tested it yesterday and everything stayed dry.

Thanks for the help!

Your Welcome, Anytime i Can be of help just ask!

Red, Blue, Black as long as its the High Temp you got the right stuff!

For resolving the oozed-out of the silicon between the Roof of your Vehicle and the Sunroofs Trim Ring, "when it cures" use a straight edge razor blade and carefully remove the access .

Price is not as important as it is to have someone with knowledge working on your vehicle, Prices can range from what ever your willing to pay!

For your knowledge:

1) Discovery I & II Headliner Boards at their widest point measure 62" (inches)

2) Most Shops use either 54" or 60" (Both to short in width to do the job!)

3) Make sure when the Headliner Board is out to be recovered to have the shop (Water Test the Exterior of Your Vehicle before the Headliner Board goes back in to make sure their are no other water leaks.)

4)Job should take only 3-4 Hours, Not 3-4 Days!

5) Dual Sunroofs make the job easier not harder and more expensive!

6) Installing the Correct 1/8th inch Headliner Material on a Land Rover Discovery with ("No Sunroofs is more Difficult") to do than with Dual Sunroofs, Watch out for the inexperienced Trim Shop that will try to Mislead you to think otherwise.

I can teach you what you need to know to get the best results for your $ even if you have not done this before, because of your lack of knowledge enables me to to teach you how to install the Material Your Self, No bad habits to break.

What my company charges to do a job of this nature does not compare to what you get elsewhere. We have been servicing Land Rover for over 20 Years. You get 100% of our Knowledge and in many cases end up doing repairs along the way that would be overlooked by company's or Do-It-Your-Selfers with less knowledge.

Ask lots of Questions

1) How long does the job Take?

2) What Type of materials and what are the widths of the Material

3)Have you ever worked on a Discovery Headliner before and if so can you provide me with a Referral Phone number to a satisfied Discovery Customer you have done work for in the past!

4) Is their a Additional Cost because having Dual Sunroofs, If they say Yes, Get off the Phone and Call someone else

I could go on and on, feel free to contact me anytime, Hope this helps you in some way. Bill

Lisa, I can teach you how to install the material your self, unlike one would think its easier to recover a dual sunroof headliner board than a Non-Sunroof Model!

You mentioned Water Leaks, were these issues ever Resolved, If not they will need to be addressed and fixed before a new Headliner goes back into the Vehicle. Bill

Headliner Removal

Can you walk me through the removal of the front headliner so that I can access the drain tubes on the sunroof tray? I know that the right drain tube has been broken, I live in a rainy area and the leak is getting unbearable. Thank you. The model is a 2000 LR Disco II.

You will need to Remove Your Sun Visors, Overhead Plastic Console ( Front ), Grab Handles, "A" "B" Post, Rear Plastic Overhead Console (Rear) When Removing the Rear Sunroof Switch from the Plastic Console theirs a Phillips Head Screw Located Behind the Switch that holds the Console to the Roof of the Vehicle that will need to be removed as well as the wires for the AC Controler and Dome Light all located behind the (Rear Console)

Heres a link to over 100 Pictures of processing a Discovery Headliner that should be very helpful.
