I just bought a 98 RR 4.6 HSE with 96k and had a few question. I have never owned a RR before but I have owned a 95, 98 and 00 Disco. So I had a few questions:

Im taking delivery of it tomorrow and what exactly should I check? What should I look out for? Are 98 models overall good? I know that in 99, they updated the 4.6. Any feedback would help.

Thanks
Nick

Things I would check:

1-EAS: Cycle through all modes manually. Make sure nothing is leaking. See how long it takes to refill the air tank after emptying it.

2-ABS: With car off, depressurize by slowly pressing brake pedal a number of times (10 or so). Turn car on, listen for ABS pump, see how long it takes for the ABS/TC lights to go off.

3-A/C: Cycle through various modes, select different temps for driver/pass side, test various ducts.

4-High/Low range on gearbox: Make sure low is working and that it properly moves back and forth between high/low with no problems.

5-Suspension: take for ride on highway, make sure it rides straight and solidly.

6-Check trouble codes: Take car to Autozone or other parts store, have them read trouble codes to make sure nothing is logged.

7-Brakes: Visually inspect the rotors/pads!

8-Cooling system: Check coolant, check radiator for good flow.

Just a few things off the top of my head.

Ok, I just got back from my HELL TRIP. It turns out that this car is a mess. From interior and exterior view, the car wasnt that bad other then wood trim fading and chrome wheels in bad shape but the price was right. I end up buying it and take it to Land Rover dealership right away which was luckily about 10 min away for a 140-Point Inspection and this is what they had to say:

FAIL STATE INSPECTION: DRAG LINKS WORN.U-JOINT. LEFT
SIDE BALL JOINT AND BRAKES (FRT AND REAR)
HEATER CORE SEAL LEAKING
HVAC BLEN DOOR MOTORS BINDING
ENGINE HAS LOWER END KNOCK(BRG DAMAGE)
HEADGASKET LEAKING
AXLE MAKING NOISE

I was in SHOCK!!! tech said it was a matter of time when the engine was just about to give up. The car was a mess, needs a new engine and a bunch of other stuff. Quickly went back and returned the car. WOW.... THAT WAS CLOSE. Its a good thing I took it to Land Rover. My search is still ON, HOWEVER, ONLY PRIVATE SELLERS from now on.

Just character......

Hi Jags4,
All those things that the LR mechanics listed are just normal characteristics that all us RR owners learn to live with.... :bawling:

No...just kidding, looks like you dodged the bullet there, good job you got it checked out.
Maybe you should mention the sellers location so no one else reading this falls for its good looks! I'm sure they will just put it back up for sale.

Good luck with your RR search,
Andy

Good lord, its hard to believe a 98 car can have that much wrong with it!

Keep looking, and don't be in a hurry or settle for something. I shopped for 6 months before I found the exact RR I wanted. It was a bit frusterating, but worth it in the end.
