Hi,
It depends what type of landrover you want, and what purpose you need it for I you can tell us what type of landrover you are looking for (range rover, discovery, series or defender) we can then give you a better idea what to look for when buying.
Cheers Onz

there are all kinds of rovers, which is most appealing? . what do you want to use one for.. camping, off road, etc.

but do understand that these newsgroups are more of a support group for people to convince themselves they made a good decision by buying a rover.
I like the "look" of my rover, but that is it. It is the worst when it comes to reliability and repair.

The grate thing about the land rover is the adventure of the drive it self .
It is not a fast car & pretty noisy to. it requires on going maintenance & yet adds spice to life.
you site high of the ground but close to nature.
If you like adventure go for the it (as for the model - deepens on your budget)

Where in Nor Cal Are you??

A couple of things to think about.. If you are mechanically inclined, then you may not care if there is a Land Rover specialist mechanic or dare i say?? a Stealer ( Dealer ) nearby. If you are in the Bay Area there are a bunch of places you can take your car. Normal Routine maintenance can be done by any grease joint ( the cheaper the better as long as they fix more than they break).. The problems get more complicated the newer the cars get. If you stick to the old school Range Rovers 95 and before, the electronics are not all that complicated. 95 and newer you are talking Dealership only fixes. If the model you look at has Air suspension, then look for ones that have been converted to springs, or plan on spending the money to do it yourself later on.
These cars are EASY to work on ( not always ) but they were designed to be used in Africa and fixed on the fly. Check Craigslist.org for listings. There is one on there for a grand that needs a new transmission. Slap a used one in there for another grand to 1500 and you have a car ready to run for 2500 bucks! Plan o spending another grand on niggling little things, and hopefully you can do your own work and detailing. These cars are so much fun! Good luck
