There is a very interesting thread on increasing gas mileage, and something mentioned and seems to work is adding a bit of acetone (paint thinner) to your gas tank. It seems as though many are doing it and seeing better gas mileage.

you realize that acetone is not paint thinner. thinner is spirits based and acetone is not. If your trying to increase the octane number a few points, then add tolulene - its safer for your engine. one gal of tolulene in 5g gas will increase it about 2-3 numbers. We do this for race stuff on supercharged and turbocharged engines.

this is the responce i got on CT DSM forum .

you haven't tried toulene yet?
114 octane, and its already in gasoline that you get at the pump, just dont get it on your paint, or use a plastic gasoline can if you're going to try it.

I don't remember the exact ron/mon ratings for it, but toulene and xylene are your friends. I think xylene's 116 octane, just be careful with too much of it, its been said to actually lean out afr's. So either watch your wideband or watch your egt's when using it.
For some of you that don't know what AFR means . it's Air Fuel Ratio :)
And EGT means Exchoust Gas Tempeture .
Wideband is like O2 sencor , but wideband and lasts fraction of the life of the regular O2 semcor and it's really acurate .

I know other things it is used for to here is a recipe for ya
3 grams of coke
2 grams of cut
1 tablespoon of Acetone
squeeze real tight till it rerocks use a light to make dry faster

It does work. I don't know if there are possible negative long term issues it can cause, but I tried it myself and used several controls in the experiment. Using a ScanGauge giving real-time feedback as far as fuel flow amd MPG, intake air temp, engine load and throttle position- I found that absolutely it works. To get rid of the variables of weather, I alternated two tanks with- two without and ran the test over the course of 9 or 10 tanks. In all conditions, in all weather, the tanks of fuel with acetone produced significant increases in fuel economy. I choose not to run it after my test because of the unknown affect on the plastic and rubber parts of the fuel system.
