Jaguar Land Rover is the latest automaker to patent an active aerodynamics system, though the British brand’s concept of adaptable aerodynamics is unique.

A recently published application in the U.K. details what the British automaker is calling a “vehicle aerodynamic apparatus,” and it’s quite different than existing active aero systems. Chevy recently patented an active aero system, but the American automaker is going after speed and handling for its sports car, while JLR seems to be more interested in fuel efficiency.

Not something I would be willing to purchase. What happens when you have a small fender bender and have to get it repaired? Repair/replacement will make the vehicle obsolete in just a few years; not worth fixing because of economics.

That's becoming true of all cars these days above the basic transportation models. My friend backed into a lightpole with his new F-150 at less than 2MPH and did $7000 damage to the aluminum bed, tailgate and the light assembly that contains the backup camera and sensors.

There are millions of people that depend upon a ten-plus year-old car that they're the fourth or fifth owner of in order to get to work. fast forward ten years from now to these current vehicles with digital dashes and incredibly complex engine management systems... how will they be able to keep them on the road? Right now a set of tires or a muffler puts a big dent into one of these people's daily lives. Between the safety and emissions equipment, combined with the high-tech features needed to compete these days, I am fearful of what this will do to those people who exist hand-to-mouth. I guess it'll be another group on government assistance. Maybe we are being hasty in driving out the illegals. We may need them.
