Just had another Land Rover day

Hello all from Adam in NYC

Just had another Land Rover day.

I was returning from eating out in Lower Manhattan Thursday and was on the way to work; was also dropping off a friend. It was a perfect evening in New York City in a cool evening , great for driving with the windows open.

Then the sunroof broke. :confused Seems the prior owner did not buy the factory sunroof but dropped in a Webasto sunroof (looks German) and the driver side regulator broke by siezing. Opened the window, the window twisted in the frame and only opened a crack.

Okay. :confused

Went to work in the Bronx, and for once my unreliable coworkers and the mercuric New York weather cooperated with me. First thing first just before and just after work I got out the tools, took apart the fascia (twenty screws and little pieces of coverplastic) and headed to the local parts bin called Hunts Point. Dozens of auto shops with every conceivable part, but only three or four glass shops actually repair power windows.

One shop owner flat out and stated in a midst of cracking the concrete of their shop full of cars and in one breath, "No we don't fix the window but we can replace it for $920.00". I dunno about that but the window alone is maybe $100.00. Just me but is there a tatoo on my forehead that states I am a sucker?

Anyhoo, I finally drive down the main drag out in the Point, stopped at two other glass places, one with a great ramp with 60 degree angle which I had a quick fun time going down (they thought only their tow trucks with dualies could take it but they never saw a Disco do it with ease).

Finally got pointed to a little glass shop out in the North Bronx. I was nice to meet a competant old-timer would knew exactly what went wrong, got a working replacement regulator that fitted exactly on the window , and got everything working inside a hour and for a modest amount (about $140).

I is happy now and now the window is working better than before.

Now you ask, you could have done it yourself, but I am unfortunately one of those urban cliff dwellers with no garage and the wisdom of not working on the street in front of a police precinct and every prospective thief who wants to take inventory of every open window, door , and bonnet. I also got that fancy interior with the bright leather and the woodtrim that hates the rain. Had to do it without the plastic bag and the duct tape routine.

Anyhoo, just got out of doing some mandatory overtime thanks to one of my "reliable" coworkers and just you know it.

The magic of Land Rover strikes again , for the better.

Right next to the job , the kids at the local school had a car wash. They called me over and I said why not. The Landy deserved a decent cleaning.

Had to show the kids how to handle a big truck washing. They even broke out a 10 foot ladder for washing the top. For once in a long while, I got wet in my FDNY*EMS uniform and had some fun and the kids did a great job. They had a great time having fun in the summer heat and doing the car wash for a good cause.

Got back to the block and then I see a good friend taking a rare stroll after fighting cancer. Pulled over and got his attention. One thing about a Land Rover, everybody loves the style and the caresma(sic). I got him in and took him for a tour of a nieghborhood , what the heck, had the window fixed, did a double, got the D1 washed by happy kids, got to hang out with a old friend.

Got some fresh Italian bread at the distant bakery, offered some cafe (coffee), and then back to the Ranch. My friend just loved the door to door service. Put the D1 to rest and went to bed.

Time to recharge. Life is good. ;)

If they ever resurrect THIRD WATCH, I sure hope they write you and your Disco into it. I'm getting a pretty good visual right now.
We, at NYC*EMS now FDNY*EMSC, were asked to solcit stories after the start of THIRD WATCH. When we first saw the first season, we realised that one of the technical advisors, an EMS supervisor, was promoting the FDNY party propaganda. We did not give any of the better stories there.

EMS and FDNY fire suppression do not share firehouses nor fire facilities in the past and only are just starting now in the present. In the whole of New York City, there is only one such firehouse now in the borough of Staten Island, and there have been several incidents in which the firemen did not like the street medics in "their" living room.

If anyone is wondering why an Emergency Medical Technician is doing in Central Booking, I had chestpain two years back and now been diagnosed with a irregular heartrate and EKG. FDNY actually believes I am going to die suddenly on the job.

I plan to kick the bucket saving lives, making a difference , on duty or with the Land Rover (I think My Discovery does not have a clue yet).

I am on a Light Duty position in one of the busiest posts in the criminal justice system doing TB surveys and first aid to prearrrainment prisoners getting ready for criminal court. Doing the day shift, they do thirty prisoners a shift, we in the night shift are doing between 100 and 160 prisoners a night , by comparison.

Since it is a light duty post, we don't have all the tools for the trade. My old friends used to call me "MacGyver" with my improvisations and I still do it. I impressed the Lincoln ER doctor the other day with a broken wrist by making a splint using the NewYorkDailyNews (no, I don't read it, it was handy).

I will state this. Nothing more than the transporting cops do than ask me and bug me about the Land Rover. If I don't have the laptop with a RAVE CD running, I have a Land Rover workshop manual open or the Haynes open.

A lot of the cops are looking for a second vehicle for home use and keep noticing my D1 with my FDNY card and always ask me about it.

"I bought it on eBay."
"I paid about 7,000 dollars for it"
" It's great for parking in NYC."
" Its got about 100,000 miles but I bought it at 90,000 miles"
" It was garage kept until this crazy EMT came along"
" The gas sucks but it makes up in fun."
"You want White Castle? The chicken rings are the best out there, next to Wendys. I will get you a sack."
"It is snowing, and whats the point?, I got no problema here dude"
"Dead battery?, got cables?"
" You maka fun of the LandRover, I a run you over and then backup and parkit on your face"

It is going to be a Land Rover week. I'm good. I had some rest.

Lets hear about your stories with your babies. How about it and make a break with "How do ya fix this" threads.

Adam, I think Serg needs to create a section just for you :D You have a great way of telling stories. :drink1:
Thanks for the accolades, gents and ladies.

Comes with the territories. Ask any EMT/paramedic and you get a ton of war stories. I will try to keep them on topic for this forum.

My best friend Felix for many has been reading the posts here and now he is reading them regular now. He loves the Discovery I got. He also just suffered helping me put the fascia back on and then towing the rugrats and picking up the wifey to the Mall and Walmart. His wifey then proceeded to some damage to his credit card.

Now he is looking for a Ride, not a rIde, not another riDe, but a Ride.

If I could, I would, in his case. He just needs a real parking space in the Bronx and a real good LR mechanic. Both seem to be in real short supply and if I come up with some dough, I won't mind putting the Bronx back with a real LR shop. Just me , though.

Meanwhile, the dog days of summer are upon here in the Baked Apple Strudle and my time working on the D1 is postponed until I don't fry in the truck like a funnel cake.

By the way, thanks again.
