To remedy stiffness in the steering and a whining noise in a 98 Disco, I had the p/s fluid and the drive belt replaced by my local mechanic (not a LR dealer). He tells me that their is a leak in the p/s pump and/or gearing and the it will have to be replaced or rebuilt but doesn't have an estimate yet. Any ideas on what it would cost to have this fixed?

When the mechanic changed the fluid, did the stiffness and noise go away?
One way to slow down or stop the leakage is to use one bottle of Lucas Power Steering additive, it is great on noise and even better on leaks.

I would try the Lucas, and I would also just have the seals replaced in the pump. I have seen kits on Ebay, and I know you can buy a kit from AtlanticBritish.com.

i had the same thing happen to me...i think it cost bout 500 dollars for the new pump and everything....however on my buddys chevy....we just replaced the hose where it was leaking from....if its just the hose...you should be able to replace that easily.....they might be just tryin to get you to spend more money at their shop....wheres the leak?
