I'm not sure how you can quantify that "compared to a Jeep it runs pretty hot" just by looking at the stock temp gauge, however, D2s can and do occasionally have overheating and head gasket problems so you definitely want to keep your eye on engine temps.
The stock gauge is useless (as it is on most cars) because by the time the needle goes above the center, it's already too late. Get yourself an UltraGauge as it will give you actual temperature readouts to give you a better idea of what's going on.
Most stock D2s range from the low 190s in normal driving and can spike up to the low 200s in stop-and-go traffic. My car runs 194F most of the time with occasional spikes up to 205F in traffic on the hottest days.
