Has anybody ever run the Barney Riley Trail? Here is the link: http://www.californiajeeper.com/barney/review.htm

Thought it might be a good trail to run for a NorCal LRO trail run before the snow sets in. The water crossings should be low enough to accomodate stock vehicles. There are some easy sections as well as challenging ones. From the pics, it looks as though stock vehicles should make it no problem over the basketball size rocks, especially with some good spotting.

There is a spot for camping also. Primitive but it should work. Bring in firewood. If we go, I'll look into campfire permits.

Any thoughts?

Or do we just want to be pansies and go to Hollister?

I'd be interested :D It looks like decent trail for a noobie... I trust you'd spot me RoverX :drink1:

When are you looking to go? Know in you, you'll be going next weekend :D
Really, just let me know what date works and I'll see if I plan it. Are you looking to camp one night? Like a Saturday drive up and head back on Sunday?

Only Rovers or could a J**p buddy tag along?

I'm thinking about Nov 5 & 6 or Nov 19 & 20. Leave Sat. am from a meeting point that works for everyone. Run the trail Sat, arrive at camp for happy hour around 4pm, camp that night - maybe some type of potluck where everyone brings their own meat and a side dish to share, then explore the area Sunday am, head out after lunch - or if anyone has any other suggestions, I am more than open to them.

Anyone can join up as long as they can take a little light hearted ribbing. :D But I would like to keep it under 15 vehicles. Anything over that will take forever, especially since I have not run this trail before.

Don't worry, we'll take plenty of pics!

Also, if someone doesn't want to take their stocker out, they can ride with me.

Oh yeah...BYOB.... :drink1:

I have received some feedback from the Norcal rovers yahoo email ring. Some of the guys would like to do Deer Valley. Here is the link: http://www.californiajeeper.com/deerval/review.htm

It is a little tougher than Barney Riley, but with some good spotting, a stocker should be just fine. Although I will not guarantee that! The pics of the Black Widow in the Show It Off section are some parts of the Deer Valley trail. Keep in mind that I do have a lift and MT's and my driving habits are "I wonder if I can do that." You can avoid the rocks I chose not to. But there are some tough sections where a stocker will need to take a little extra care but they could make it. The biggest obstacle for a stocker is the gate keeper but I have seen many stockers make it through.

hey roverX i think both these trails got a dumping of snow, over the past few days... unless all of us wanna go in the snow...

I don't think they did. Yesterday I went up to the summit on 108. Still was pretty warm during the day. Took a few fire roads with my 3 boys. To them, anything off pavement is "offroading with dad." :D Taking the fire roads along the telephone pole paths might be something fun to do at some point. There were a couple of times where I might have gotten stuck if I didn't know how to drive correctly. Didn't realize how much powder type dirt I was in on the way doen the hill. I realized it going up!!

Although 4 is a couple miles north, I am pretty sure they didn't get any snow. Lately, the snowseason hasn't been hitting us until after Thanksgiving, except last year was wild.

SCSL..excuses, excuses. :D

If you go up 108, if you haven't been on it, take the FR-6N24, I think the sign says Niagra Creek, it goes off to the right just before the Donnels Lake Lookout area. Then take the first right on FR-5N04, miles of roads back there and the Niagra Rim Trail. You can go all the way back to the Emigrant Basin Wild Area if you want. Just don't go up (left) where you see the Niagra Rim Trail Sign unless you have a good rig. I made it up in my D2 without using the winch or getting pulled, but cost me a front u-joint and a motor mount.

Barney Riley trail is located east of Markleeville and ends close to the Nevada state line.
If its on a weekend, then im all good. I would prefer the later of the two dates.....that is, if I am invited.

btw, would anyone be interested in doing a Black Rock desert trip??
Its completely flat, but its an amazing thing to see. So vast and open....and stockers (or really anything, ie. toyota camery) could come. Just a suggestion.

Dude, of course you are invited. Everyone is. It is on a weekend.

As far as Black Rock goes, I think there is a trip coming up in Feb or March.

Feb might be a little too early; just keep in mind, its a desert, so it is COLD and HOT. When I went in aug. I woke up at 6am and it was 30 deg F out (according to rover) and the ground was hard frozen. Four hours later it was 85 deg.

Either way, im totally in. Is this a discoweb/EE thing, or would this be a LRO thing?

This current trip will be a non-sanctioned trip (liability of course!). I did not mention it on dweeb. I did mention it on the Norcal yahoo email ring.

The Black Rock trip is not affiliated with organization either. You will find that most trips are non-sanctioned due to liability issues, especially here in California.

You guys keep mentioning midwestern places...you guys need to check out Oceola National Forest here in central Florida and get your Rovers WET!!
A cross country trip..........

You could come through Texas, hook up with the Texans and Okies, and others, head to Fla. and the East coast guys could gather the troops on the way down the coast?

One big beer guzzling, wheeling, LRO family freindly bash somewhere in Fla. Any beaches to camp on down there? :drink1:
