Hello everyone,

My 01' Disco started leaking coolant at a high rate earlier this week. The leak is so bad that as I put in coolant I could see it leaking out from the back of the engine near the drivers side.

Once I put the coolant in, it would run fine for awhile, then the heat would go out and the temp would start going up, so I stopped driving it.

I got it to the dealership and got some bad news. They said they could not find the leak, and the leak was so bad that a pressure test was pointless since the coolant system had no pressure.

They said most likely I would need a whole new engine ($10k+), and the only way they could find the problem is to take the engine apart, which is a $2,500 job. They also said I should not drive the car, and I need to get it towed from the dealership.

Is my car done for? It broke down about 6 hours from home, and the only way I can get it back to my mechanic back home is to tow it ($$).

Get it out of the dealership. Anymore, dealerships are in the business of replacing things, not fixing them. You need to get it to your guy, who hopefully is familiar with LR's. Yea, it may be something expensive, but maybe not. Eat the cost of the tow.

Currently looking for an affordable towing company. Had 180k miles on it, praying for at least 20k more before I buy a new car!

After getting more information from the dealership, they say it may be a cylinder sleeve (But they can't be certain until they take apart the engine).

I know you all are very knowledgeable on DII's, so do you think this may be causing the huge coolant leak? And if it is, how much is this fix?

Tough break buddy!
Maybe post where you are located and a member might be able to refer you to someone they know in your area.
Sure looks like a head gasket leak but you need to find someone you trust to diagnose it.
Hate to say it but the reality is that dealerships are only as good as the people working for them.
My 2002 came to me through a dealer mis -diagnosed head gasket / engine. Owner walked away from it. Turned out to only need a radiator
Best of luck.
I think I would bite the bullet and tow it back home.
