My 96 disco diesel auto’ abs warning light keeps coming on

My 96 disco diesel auto’ abs warning light keeps coming on. If I push both front sensors back in the light goes out and the abs is ok for a couple of weeks. Then it starts to work intermittently and then finally not at all until I push the sensors back in.
It has been tested by a main dealer; he said replace both front sensors as they had an open circuit. If that’s correct why do they work when I push them back in?
Has anybody else had a problem like this?
