I just bought a 96' Disco I from my brother (and it was really neglected). I'm havinig issues with the gears (1-2 grinds hard) and 3-4 make a ratteling noise.
I took it to a mechanic who said I need a new Trani' because the throw-out bearing was not oiled when installed and it has ruined the trani.
The mechanic said it is driveable now but it does not have much life left in it (ie the transmission).
I looked for a rebuilt trani but all I could find were atuomatics, mine is a 5 speep manual. I called my local LandRover dealer and they said the trani' will be $3120.00 plus misc. parts (nuts, bolts etc...) $87.50 per hour for 15 hours (plus/minus).
My long winded question is can anyone direct me to a rebuilt trani' for a $1000.00 or less?

Thanks

Well, I don't quite believe that a throw-out bearing will kill a transm. I have a 96 5-speed too. I have 105k 1st through 2nd has issues but thats common. I just shift a little slower, no problems. If you want a rebuilt 5-speed you can get one from atlantic british for $2095.95. Take it to, a independant Land Rover shop. Look around throughout some forums, you can find a used transmission. There are many shops that have them just sitting around.

Also check the oil level, try some lucas stablizer first.

Yes, Will Tillery will have what you need. I did the tranny on my 95 Disco by myself in a few days.

Will posted recently in the For Sale section.

Good luck.

BTW, where are you in CT?

converting 5-speed to automatic

Any comments/thoughts about converting a 5-speed to an automatic? The truck has 120k on it. I find the gear ratio is so low. It is as if first gear is not needed, and I am constantly shifting.

I, Also, do not see what the throwout bearing has to do with a transmission being good or bad, unless, of coarse they aren't dissengaging the clutch when you're trying to shift, but you'd know that from gear grinding.

If your tranny is bad, it isn't likely it went south because of the throwout bearing, but if you need to replace it, check with George, at Rovers Down South. He has them listed on his website for $1675. An R380 is a very rebuildable gearbox, so why replacee it instead of just rebuilding it?

R380s are relatively bulletproof, but often resist gearchanges when forced. As others have said, they can behave almost civily if they aren't forced. If you shift with your fist, instead of your fingers, they can balk at engaging.

Unless you can get ahold of a parts vehicle, don't attempt to convert it to automatic. There are loads of bits you'd need apart from the gearbox; like a new console, shift selector, shift and kickdown cables, and electrical bits.
The car, at that age isn't really worth the investment in a change like that.

first gear is low, depending, i usually skip first gear of the line. start in second, rev it up and slid into forth. part of the beauti of having a standard is being able to hold gears, skip gears and when off roading, great for holding a gear when going down hill :)
my gear box went toast one day... the shaft in the tranny broke, dont' know why or how. suspect it was when i was parked illegally and had it towed and the weenie tow truck driver didn't use the dolly... other than that, yes first and second at times can be a bitch
take care
