I have a 2003 Disco II. It was in dire need of some new rubber when I purchased it a few weeks ago. Previous tire was the Geolander AT H-S. I live in East TN where we have mild winters, lots of muddy and rock strewn trails through the mountains and plenty of rain.
The Rover is my daily driver and rides on the stock, coil sprung, suspension. I plan on spending the majority of my time commuting to work but I don't want to regret my tire purchase every time I make it to the trail head.

So I began searching for a serious all terrain tire in the OEM size 255/65 16.
Top of my wish list:
BFG AT KO
Good Year Silent Armor
Cooper Discoverer AT3

I found that the OEM size with a load rating of 109 and speed rating of H is NOT the most common tire size. I wanted to stay with the OEM size so...
The short list:
Falken Wildpeak AT (not name brand)
General Grabber AT 2 (like the BFG's old design)
Toyo Open Country AT 2 (pricey)

My decision was to go with the Falcon Wildpeak AT. I picked them up at Pep Boys. List price was $160. I was in and out in right at an hour in the middle of the day during the week none the less.

My initial thoughts: (less than 1,000 miles) Very quite on the road, well mannered on my daily commute. Attractive looking tire as you approach the Rover. Very nice ride.

I plan on giving another update after I have had an opportunity to test them offroad on the trail.

Update with Pics

Here are a couple of pictures of the new tires on the Rover. They fit nicely into the wheel wells with a few inches of room for articulation, as expected since they are the stock OEM size. They do have the pattern down the sidewall which in this application is most likely just for show. (Photo 1&2)
Test conditions:
Heavy Rain road handling. Plenty of rain this fall has given me to opportunity to log several hours of wet road testing. Grip is good in all the wet road conditions I have encountered. Standing water, damp streets are no problem. I do not notice in loss of grip when braking.
Gravel Road. Low to moderate speed no quick braking just easy drive. No traction issues, which I would not expect. There was plenty of rain and mud. The tires did a great job “self cleaning.” There were a few tiny stones left in some of the small snipes on the tire but no larger rock in the lugs. (photo4)

I hope to get to the trails soon. I will let you know how they do in offroad conditions.

Carl, The Falken have performed well for me. They strike the right balance for the use I have in mind. If this Rover were a trailer queen or 3rd vehicle that I used primarily for weekend use then I would have gone with something more aggressive.
