I'm sure that I'm opening a can of worms here, but I'm thinking of upgrading the tires on my "bone stock" 98 Disco. Looking for suggestions on a good all-around tire, I'm no soccer mom, but to be perfectly honest I do spend 99% of my time of the road. A few times a year I will haul my duck boat to the swamp. I would like an aggressive looking off-road tire that performs well both on and off road -- does such an animal exist?

I'm currently running Cooper 235/70/16 (??) :dunno:

Also, how big can I go without and further mods? :buttrock:

Pictures would be helpful.

BTW - this is a great forum, I have learned a great deal in a short period of time and have even had a local invite to go off-road, woo hoo! :drive:

I have a 96. As far as a tire size, the biggest I would go with is a 245/70/16.
The "best" three I can think of is
A. BF Goodwrench A/T (All Terrains)(I want these)
B. Yokahama Geolander A/T II(I had these, Great Tires)
C. Bridgestone Dueler Revo (I had the old version of these, good tires but the ride was a little rough. They were 6ply tires(ask the salesman on that))

I hope this helps

Rov'n...... I think those will be too big. I know you can go with a 225/75/16, that is thinner And taller than a 235/70/16. I have a 1.5 inch suspension lift, and I have 255/70/16, they are a little bouncy, and on tight turns, rub just a hair. The 225/75/16 are just as tall as the 255/70/16, but are not as wide, so they don't rub on tight turns. I hope this helps you. :)

Landy, all you have to do is push out the bottom of the rear quarter panels. It takes about 15 mins to do each side and all you need is a mending brace and two nuts/bolts.

I run BFG ATs 265/75s on my 96 D1 w/3" lift (real 3" lift not the OME BS).

Online Tire Selector

Ok, BF Goodrich and Michelin have online tire utilities like this:
Michelin Tire Selector

However, they seem to steer you towards the OEM spec tires 235/70/16

Anyone know of any other utilities like this that are more liberal?

Goodyear recommends this tire: Fortera HL

This is a funny write up but it sound slike what I need...

"Smooth, Quiet Ride And Rugged Appearance For Luxury SUVs
Fortera is a complete paradox of performance. It's smooth, yet aggressive. Powerful, but refined. Fortera combines the assertive handling, traction and responsiveness of an SUV tire with all the quiet comforts of a touring radial. The end result is an excellent balance of performance throughout the entire life of the tire."

Our first Rover was a 97' Discovery SE7 we put an OME lift on it and ran the Pirelli Scorpion A/T (stock size). We traveled a lot from Sacramento to San Jose at least once a week (2hrs.). I liked the tires because they were a nice stock replacement without getting agressive. The were also quiet. I've attached images so you can get an idea on how they looked.

Good thing I founf this thread... as a new Disco owner I too am looking at having to replace the tires... Currently it has 225-75-16 Dunlop Radial Rovers. I know that stock size is 235-70-16, so when I was down at West Coast British yesterday I asked Michael Green what tires and what size I should run. Michael knows his Land Rovers in and out... anyhow, he said the size and make of what I had was ideal... Said too much tire will F**K up the gearing..

The wheels and tires on my '95 RRC came from a Disco I. The guy had a 3" lift and ran 255-70-16 Scorpions. No idea how they worked on his Disco, they reduced my lock to lock on my RRC though.

So I am wondering what brand and what size to go with.... the XD will spend 90% of it's time on the road..

As I have 255/70/16 on My Disco, they are not too bad, and with a 3" lift, they should work nicely. I would not go bigger than that though. I am planning on going down to 245/70/16. More articulation!

I have had scorpions too, forgot to mention that. I liked them also! :D

Not to PI$$ anyone off....but,Serg, do you really have that much faith in Michael Green? He seems great on Series and RRC, Nothing personal, just wondering, I have found a few of his comments and knowlage on newer Rovers....wanting :confused

Same here. I run 255x70x16 BFG 'Mud Terrains' on one of my units (no lift), and I'm very happy with them. My suggestion would be the above size, in 'All terrains'.

Well from talking to him, seeing the work that he's done, knowing people that he did work for, I think he is pretty damn knowledgeable.. From what I have seen, he gets mostly Series, RRC and Disco I vehicles in his shop... No idea what his knowledge is on newer stuff.
