I just picked up a 2003 Discovery SE- traded my Audi A6 for it. 160k, strong engine and drivetrain. No rust in any of the usual areas. Though the big back door is clunky it opens an closes fine. Interior was a bit dirty but I was able to clean that up pretty well.
I do have a bit of play in the wheel but I believe that could be tie rods. In addition the PO changed the wiper arms to the Disco I arms. I'm thinking of putting the others back on as they are longer and appear to accept a larger blade. Thoughts? I'm the type to keep a vehicle maintained well. Not planning a lot of modification as I am working on my project: an 87 Mercedes 190e 2.3-16 Cosworth.

Any friendly words of advice? Either way I look forward to learning about these. I've always liked them.

Why would you want to go back to the D2 arms and those overly costly blades.
How mechanical are you? You might want to read my major service list posted at the top of this section and do all of it based on your mileage, especially the inspection/rebuild or replacement of the front drive shaft if it hasn't been done before.

Honestly, I put it out there to see if there was benefit. I had similar blades on my BMW and would just order refills, but they really covered the window well and never lifted at speed. Wasn't sure if these were similar

I do ok as long as there are no super specialized tools necessary. Is there something that would indicate the need to rebuild/replace the front Driveshaft?

Thanks for your quick response Disco Mike

The issue is that the stock front driveshaft has non-greasable u-joints. What eventually happens is the u-joints dry out and fail. They then bind and explode into your transmission casing and put a big hole in the aluminum transmission case. By changing the u-joints to ones that can be greased at every oil change, you can avoid that situation altogether.

A bad u-joint in your front driveshaft may cause vibration, squealing, squeaking, or give you no warning at all. The parts cost under $100 and it takes an afternoon to do the job. You'll need a vise, press, or large c-clamp to do the job, in addition to some sockets to remove the driveshaft and press out the old u-joints and install the new ones. You would be wise to pick up a grease gun and grease if you don't already have them. Any grease is better than no grease, but some recommend an NGL #2 rated grease. There is an inexpensive red grease tube sold at Wal-Mart, Supertech/Wal-Mart brand, and it says NGL #2 - that one is fine.
Also have to change the centering ball. If you want to do it your self, send me your e-mail address and I'll send you a PDF file on how and what to do along with part numbers.

Disco Mike: I'm in the middle of the front driveshaft project and could use the PDF you mentioned above. I read that a slide hammer will do the trick?

It's on it's way to you.
Hi Disco MIke I have had a few of these Discoverys I would like a copy of this center ball pdf also . I am going to be doing front drive shaft u joints on a 2003 with 100k that I just bought at auction for $2500. It is an HSE7 model that looks real clean. E mail is [email protected]

At the same auction I got a 2003 Se with 122K for $1200

Thanks so much.
Also forgot to mention my 16 year old son drives a 1997 D 1 SE7with 122,000 that I also bought at the auctions for $700. It needed shocks and a water pump and hoses.
What a great first ride for him. Not too fast and lots of metal around him.
I really love these old Discos. They seem to all go really cheap at the dealer auctions.

Thanks
Mike,
May I have a copy too, please.

New Disco owner as well. Not sure what I'm getting in to but.... If you could send a copy of that pdf, it'll be on my to do list for sure.

Thanks,

Rick

Hi Mike, I was wondering if you had a chance to email that PDF on the centering ball. I have not gotten it yet. e mail is [email protected]. Thanks so much. Also I am a little confused on the u joints. On my truck there is a zerk on the u joint that is on the diff. I cant see any on the u joint on the transfer case. Why would that be? Thanks, Steve
