Hi all, I'm new to Land Rovers, and although I have yet to own one I have the bug :) I am thinking of getting a Series 3 and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what are the major things i need to look for in one to put me off, as I can't do much by the way of welding and suchlike. Any help is appreciated Cheers

Rusty Outriggers, Rusty Bulkheads, Rusty Rear Crossmembers. Oh yeah, then there's Rusty Frame Horns, Rusty Center Crossmembers (the one beneath the gearbox), and maybe Rusty Door frames, especially the bottom frame member.
Then there's those little hat channels that run beneath the tub floor, crosswise. They can Rust Out too, not to mention Rusty brake lines.

Smokey engines, wobbly steering and sloppy gearboxes are part of land rover ownership and don't bother me abit. It's all that rust that puts me off.

DaveO,
Yeah, as TerryS mentions, the rust can be the terminal problem for some of these trucks...however, being as you're in the UK, replacement pieces should be pretty easy to come by...well, except for the firewall or bulkhead. You *have* to weld new door posts and footwells in there for a proper repair. Mine took 40 hours of welding work to get back together...so if you can't do that yourself, it's a major expense.

Also, if you can find a diesel or an LPG conversion, that would be better for your wallet, my truck hasn't ever done better than 17mpg.

Everything else is pretty easy to fix on these trucks...There really shouldn't be any smoke out the tailpipe or sloppy steering...
