For a person just getting into the whole 4x4 side of his mostly-stock Disco 95 3.9 V8i with 122,000 km (and just about every moving part rebuilt or replaced), what is your recomendation as far as necessary modifications?

Keep in mind that I don't have an unlimited budget and that it'll probably take me a couple years of work to get it fully off road capable.

Where should I start?

I already have a brush bar, roof rack, and am running on Goodyear 215 80 R16 Wrangler AT/S.

First thing, get rid of the brush bar (decreases your departure angle and can bend very easily into the body of your Disco), second get bigger tires and third send me some pics of some "mujeres bonitas, che"....

Get a lift (1" to 1.5") using homemade spacers, make some 1" shock extenders (gives you some flex) and get slightly larger tires. Get some protection for your diffs and gas tank (if possible) and some helmets for the kids.

And last, enjoy your Disco!!!

Recovery points

Remember I'm totally ignorant. I know I have 4 tie-down points on the Beast, 2 front and 2 back. Will these do?

What exactly do I need to do to get "recovery points"?

I presume that the lift, shock extenders and diff/gass tank protections you (John) mention are commercially available. Or could I easily manufacture these on my own?

I'll keep posting links as long as you keep the advice flowing...

NO NO, do not use the 4 tie down points, they are for flat-bed towing the vehicle ONLY.

Get a set of jate rings (either used on eBay, from the UK or from the US).

You can make the spacers, the shock extensions and the diff protectors. Check out this link for info on making your own diff protectors. I don't like this type of protector because it WILL fall off if you slide down a rock (been there done that). For U$S110 each you can get very good diff protectors from us (QT service brand). Small price to pay for good protection.

The gas tank plate is doable also, just need someone to put a bend in the plate.

I ship alot to SA so if you need anything just let me know.

Senor Guevara, if you keep posting pics like that, you'll likely have a few guys offering to modify your rig for you... and at no cost.

And I'm talking about the llamas. :D

I'm in, when is the trip to Bolivia? Maybe RoverX can distract the llamas (If you squint they look like sheep) and keep them away from the Chicas......

Oh, Lights, Lights, Lights..........Don't want to hit those furry beasts in the dark (The llamas)

nice signature line there, rover. so you've always been a sucker for a girl in uniform?
Most women that are from or have roots south of the border tend to be Catholic...

About 90% of all the girlfriends I have had were Mexican, Spanish, El Salvadorian, you get the picture. I love that culture too.

Jate Rings

Good stuff John! I'll be in the US for the winter holidays, thus plan on muling back a whole bunch of parts/pieces for the New Year (the customs function of the local government tends to "lose" some shipments, especially the smaller ones). Nonetheless, rest assured that the advice will be rewarded when the time comes.

As far as the jate rings go, I see that there are at least two sizes (if not more). What size should I be looking at? Are there other secrets?

I tend to go for the tried and true, rather than the experimental, thus the diff guards will probably be commercial. Jury's still out on the fuel tank guard.

As promised: http://www.bolivia.com/noticias/AutoNoticias/DetalleNoticia8750.asp

Ran into her last night at the movies (not kidding). I've seen some pictures of her in a schoolgirl uniform. Rover, what are they worth?

Actually, she's 19 now - you didn't think that I'd give up the good stuff up front, did you?

Hey, to have someone I can trust take a look at the Beast and give me an honest opinion of what I'm looking at, it would be worth arranging a meet and greet with homegirl and a few of her friends...

Oh, and there's probably some decent off-roading to be done around here. I could talk to the local 4x4 club (I've seen them around and will look them up soon, but not before my ride is ready to do so).

Cheers,

Axle Lockers

Thanks Disco! So what do you call your vehicle?

When you mention axle lockers, would you recommend just on the rear axle? Don't forget that I don't plan on doing any real aggressive off roading quite yet.

The diff lock (engaged) on the Disco means that the center differential is locked, right? Is there a way to verify that this is working properly other than driving on a hard surface and inflicting pain on the Beast?
