OK, Now The Questions Begin

So I've had my 2003 Disco a few days and this morning I noticed a "damp spot" under the very front of the truck in my driveway, so I look underneath thinking it might be Coolant and nope, all the way at the front where (I guess) the steering arms are, there is what appears to be (reddish colored liquid) Transmission fluid. I looked at the front driveshaft and it was clean and looked rather new. Is there a transmission cooler or something up there that could leak?

Help me diagnose this one please

There is. Usually see the lines to/from the cooler leak, and not the cooler itself, but its not unheard of by any means.

Pop the radiator cover off, and you have pretty good visibility of the lines right there.
If that is the case is it a matter of tightening the lines or looking to replace them?

Sorry if I sound "speshuh", but I want to be sure; are you talking about the cover under the hood that the coolant hose is attached to?
Replacing the line which is a "B***H". That is some that should be done ASAP cause it is one of the biggest reasons for Disco's to burn to the ground.
How mechanical are you, if not start calling around to get a couple estimates on replacing the line. Also, you tranny is probably getting low, do you know how to check it?

GREAT! So I guess I need to stop driving it:dunno:

I'm not too bad with the mechanics and labor prices are a motivator for me. Is there a write up on replacing it? and is it REALLY that bad to do?

It could also be some part of your steering system. It also uses reddish colored ATF as the hydraulic fluid. The lines and the steering gear box are notorious for leaking - check to make sure that it's not them. Fortunately if it's the steering lines it's an easy fix. If it's the gearbox you can get away with replacing the steering fluid with high-mileage ATF (I like Valvoline) and Lucas power steering fix. That'll take care of all but the most aggressive leaks.
Mine leaked at the hard lines going into the cooler...on the cooler itself. I bought a used one and havent had any problems yet.

Was it hard to replace? Is there a write up on it?

So I stopped driving it for a few days and took a few minutes, pulled the grill, radiator top cover and ran it up on my ramps and this is what I saw:

So would you agree it has to do with the Tranny cooler? Power steering doesn't appear to be leaking. It was a little low (just below the minimum line) so I filled w/ Lucas PS Sealer. My leal still appears to be just as bad though and the PS hasn't lost anymore fluid.

Thoughts?

Definitely trans fluid, but lines vs cooler you can really tell from the pictures. If you determine it is just the cooler, just know that you might end up needing lines as well, see more then a few that were seized on the cooler that could not be removed without damage to the fitting.
Send me your number and I'll call you with some questions and answers.
My lines were really hard to get off, then getting them back on sux. Getting that click on the fittings sux. Keep the lines really straight with each other while loosening or installing. I had to take alot out to get to it. It was good practice for the cooling nightmare to come. If its got over 120k without the cooling system worked on I would change every piece of it while your there.

Mine has 160k and it seems that a lot has been replaced. So I'm not sure
Where are you in NC? When you get this sorted out, there are lots of good trails depending on which part of NC your in.

I'm in Charlotte, about 3 hours south of you
It doesn't make sense that there is atf fluid on the pax side...unless you park on a slope. All the usual leaky bastards are together on the drivers side. The a/t cooler lines enter and exit just below the upper radiator hose. You can check those by running your fingers under them easy enough. If the steering box may be leaking from the input shaft at full lock only, then will run under the box and along to the front of the frame, then either down around the recovery point, or could continue across the cross member, if parked at an angle, under the radiator, and present itself on the pax side?

Come to think of it, the a/t lines are on the pax side. Ok. It's time for a beer. This two day heat wave caught me without refreshments.
