HELP!! I just purchased a 96 Discovery and am awaiting an ordered Owner's Manual but when I drove it home last night it popped out of High Range on the Freeway 4 times! Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it easily...maybe I'm doing something wrong. When we test drove it it did fine. We did put it into Low Range in the parking lot to make sure it would engage...and it did fine...and went right back into High Range...but then when we accelerate in the higher gears...it pops right out of High....Please help!

Hey, i have a 96 as well...make sure, even the the warning sound has gone off, that when you engage, you move the lever as far back as you can, even if it feels you're going to break it...its a b**ch for me to put it into Low, i have to put all my weight foward on the lever...make sure you feel a click when you engage.

Thanks for the input

I called the nearby dealer and the mechanic told me to put the transfer case shifter all the way back and right as far as it will go. Since it is AWD all of the time is there a special procedure when switching b/t High and Low Range (e.g., wheel/hub locks). Also, I have a manual transmission and the transfer case shifter seems to have 6 positions (forward left, middle, and right and back left, middle, and right) is there a purpose for this? Thanks for your prompt feedback. Is this the differential lock? :buttrock:

Dealer is correct sir..hehe....as for your transmission, its a 5 speed so you have 5 gears, and Reverse...so to engage the low or high gears you would leave the main gear selector anywhere in the middle ( Neutral ) and beat that transfercase-lever to submission..haha

I have a problem with Low. I can feel it click in, but the alarm still sounds and it clicks right out into Neutral as soon as I let go of the lever.

Still doing it...

:drive: I tried it again....with the transfer case selector all the way back and right (High) but it still popped out of High twice so I'm not sure what to do at this point (other than bite the bullet and bring it to the dealer). I can put it in High and lock the differential and it stays in High w/o popping out but I don't want to do that for extended periods of time...It just seems like my transfer case shifter (not the gear shifter) has 6 positions...any other advice.

I had a little issue like this when I first got the 96 Discovery, and I finally realized that I was not getting it all the way into high due to the stiffness of the shifter boot. After much off road transfer case manipulation I finally got it to work correctly. You do have the transfer case shift pattern as follows: Far right rear: Hi, open diff. Next position forward: Neutral. Next position forward: Lo, open diff. Far left rear: Hi, diff locked. (don't drive on dry pavement in difflock) Next position forward: Neutral (same neutral as open, this is where you move the stick left to right, or right to left) next position forward: Lo, diff locked. (again, don't drive on dry pavement in difflock). TRANSMISSION should be in neutral when shifting transfer case. You will also find that it is easier to shift the transfer case FULLY into gear if you are rolling forward straight ahead @ 0 to 5 mph, as the sticker on the front of the console says, but no faster. I also like to back up a few (10) feet to let the driveline "unwind" before I shift out of difflock. Good Luck, LRW

Original poster, it maybe that when shifting between low and high the shifter is not engaging entirely. LIke someone else stated try shifting it back into unlocked high from low at low speeds 0-5mph, and make sure you give it a good tug to "seat" it. I Liken it to shifting a manual with a clutch going bad.
