After months of wondering where my 2004 Disco was leaking power steering from I decided to get serious about finding it this Friday before just pulling and replacing the $300ish pump. Armed with a giant can of engine degreaser and a couple cans of carb cleaner I pulled the air snorkel to get a better shot at the pump area. I also had acquired an inspection mirror and light from harbor freight.

Best I could tell after cleaning was the fluid was seeping out of the supply hose at the pump body. So I order a $25 Rein hose from O'Reilly's and started my adventure. It looked to be the stock hose as it had the stock snap type hose clamps on each end. The end at the reservoir was no problem but getting the one off at the pump using a small punch and the mirror became a bit of a challenge. Finally got it off then struggled to get the hose off. I was finally able to pry it off with a short screw driver.

Now I figured I was home free. Wrong. I lubed the end of the new hose but it was so tight and the area to get your hands in is limited it was quite a struggle. Eventually I whittled a slight bevel in the opening of the hose and that seemed to help. I installed new screw type clamps and so far no leak. So after about 2 hours and some nicely scuffed and bruised hands and arms I have the satisfaction of having stopped a leak on a Land Rover. :grin

You got off easy. I recently replaced the pump to gearbox pressure line, which for whatever reason goes under the radiator and back out the same side. Bizarre routing, but at least it showed me where all my rust was hiding.

How did you get that hose out? I've heard you can remove the left front wheel and work it out the fender well?

I am fortunate enough to have a few lifts, so yes, left front wheel off. Bumper off. There is a plastic panel in the wheel well that comes off to give better access to to both the pump and box. With the bumper off, you can get to the brackets that hold the line to the radiator support. The line can be removed from the wheel well. It’s still a mess. Especially when all of the screws are rusted and uncooperative.
