i have a question on front axle i took apart the driver side hub assembly and about a cup of gear oil came out of the knuckle part. when i put it back together do i have to add gear oil back to it or does it get oil from the diff? it looks like there is a plug to take out to add some...

There are three threaded plugs on the older type front hubs, a small one at the bottom for draining the hub, a big one at the top with a 1/2" square drive head for filling it and a third 1/4" head plug about two thirds of the way up on the front for guaging the level - oil flows out when it's full enough. The hub takes 1/2 imperial pint (8 fl oz) EP90 gear oil.

On the later hubs there is no level guage plug, these hubs should instead be filled with the new grease packs.

You can use the grease packs in the older type of hub, but then you should mark the filler plug with yellow paint as a code to tell the next guy along that's what you've done.

Where does it say "Plug painted yellow ... I used grease packs." ???

Swivel house oil change was negelected by myself for more than 100K miles on 1991 RR. Then I saw OkieRovers swivel house/CV rebuild and got inspired to change all diff's, transfer and swivel oils. GLAD I did since one swivel housing had less than 1/10 the required fluid.

Hey, maybe it was painted yellow once and it wore off....

One Shot Baby!!

Grease packs are called " One Shot" basically one tube per side. The cost about $8.00 each, and are a heavy weight grease as opposed to the Oil that originally came with these cars. The grease stays put, where as the oil was notorious for leaking out and leaving you with a cracked CV. The old addage applys here.. IF IT AINT LEAKING.. ITS EMPTY!!

PS MOTO ONE is a close friend of mine and I wish i knew HALF of what he does!
