Is there any other way to get the security code for a 98 Discovery without having to take it to the dealer?

you might be able to call the dealer, they might give if they know you well enough.

with much luck the dealer will have you show your title, drivers license ect and then they will give it to you.

I called the nearest dealer for my radio code. All they needed was the VIN. I have never visited or even spoken to anyone there before, I think if it is an older disco they don't care. Try a phone call to LR Boise

My dealership puts the radio code on every invoice they give me, so take a look around the glovebox to see if there are any invoices.
