The steam from the blown heater core has hosed my radio. It plays for about 30 seconds and then shuts off for 10 seconds, lather, rinse, repeat.

So I see on rangerovers.net a fellow in Arkansas that refurbs the factory unit for $220 (ish). So I went to BestBuy yesterday and saw that I can get a new "head unit" as the kid called it for right at 200$(US). Prices go up from there. My kids would think I was "totally fly" and the shiznit (whatever that means) if I got a head unit that had all the lights and crap on it.

When I mentioned the angle of the unit he called the install guys. At that moment the "free install" went bye bye. He said due to the sound system "some stuff would need to be rewired". And there was a charge.

SOOOOOoooooo
Who has replaced their radio?
What did you buy?
Where did you buy?
Does it still control the 6 disc changer?
Was there any "rewiring" to do?

It's killing me not to hear Bob and Tom in the morning and my literacy is suffering because I am not able to listen to my books on CD. ;)

Looking forward to hearing from all of you.

CMT TRADING

I get all my stuff here.. I pick up Blaupunkt 200 watt CD players with removable faces for $130.00, then throw in some good speakers, re wire with bulky wires ( PITA ) it sounds ok.. as long as you get decent speakers..

NO it does not work with the CD changer.. I threw mine away after disecting it to get my cd's and cartridge out. In my humble opinion.. Get a system that is XM or Sirius ready, then you can get a portable one that plugs in to your car, boat, or boom box, its expensive but you have satellite radio where ever you go...

I am assuming you have a Harmon Kardon system like mine was.. the speakers are garbage after all this time.. The only thing i miss from my system is the sub wooffer..

OKIE - be prepared! As usual...

So here is the snuff! I replaced my RRC head unit, took out the 6 CD changer and disconnected my factory AMP a.k.a. big MF.

I replaced the head unit with a Pioneer Elite one, bought on ebay for under $300 can't remember the exact $$, then bought a pair of MBQuartz (the best) speakers with tweater crossovers for the rear (replaced the ones up in the headliner) and mountd the tweaters on the posts.

So homey da skinny is my rig bounces!!! :D Ya gots ta bounce da rig homes :D :buttrock:

Actually the Pioneer getup is awesome - the kids love the graphics, it has some thing in it that allows me to play scenes, kinda like screen savers on computers (it comes with about 14 of them!). It sounds fantastic, the speakers are great and I do not need my amp.

SO - I paid the local stereo shop $150 to put in, they said it is a wonderful setup....I AGREE!

PS - I sold the OEM head unit and 6CD changer for $400 on ebay!!!!! NET I was out $25 on shipping - I AM Soooooooooo GOOOOD!

oh BTW the 6cd changer can not b used with any non OEM head units, something about the wiring!

SEE YA :drive:

Well, FWIW...

I have an alpine (not sure of the model) cassette head unit with an alpine 12 disk changer in teh tool area in the back. I have a kenwood 125 watt amp with a 10W0 JL audio subwoofer. I did 5 inch eclipse speakers in the stock locations, had to cut the rears a little bigger.

It sounds great... loud enough that it's too loud if you turn it up, great bass. I love it.

I replaced the stock stereo in my 91 RR w/ a Blaupunkt Hiedleberg. It was about $200 when I bought it. The specs on it clearly state that it can be mounted at the odd 30 degree angle (or whatever it is) that the stock radio is at. I'm sure other head units can do it to, but the blau specifically touted that it could. I love how it has a clean, almost factory, look, and it DOESN'T have all the disco lights you see on all the other radios out there today. I did have to run the wiring direct to the speakers, and soon after, I installed a 5 channel amp to pump up the power a little bit. It's no ghetto blaster but it sounds pretty sweet. :buttrock: :buttrock:

I just added a 10" sub and Amp where the old amp and sub were located, I used 4" Earthquake in the back and squeezed in 5" in the front door pannels. I also put in tweeters where the old ones were, although they are only there for looks now, as i unplugged them because my system had too much trebble, but that was before the sub was in there, Now it CRANKS!!

Nice setup. I have been thinking about putting in a sub myself. Any advice about wiring the amp?

Yeah i removed it a long time ago.. no use lugging around stuff that does not work.. In hind sight i could have used the plastic surround and just replaced the speaker, but I think it was like a 6" speaker in there. The speaker box with a 10" subwoofer works pretty well here with the original cover. I had to cut some wood to prevent chafing of the speaker with the cover, and that made it not fit as well, but If i can some how secure it better via a strap or a couple of screws it will be much better. There is alot of space there that can be used for storage. I was thinking of putting some kind of storage compartments there, but opted for stealth speaker and amp location instead.

Dude! I am the worst when it comes to wiring.. I know you need an amp kit which consists of a big battery wire with fuse going back to the amp, but after that I have no clue.. Had the stereo store do it for me..

one bad thing is that i have two fresh new holes in my firewall.. SUCKS I mean WTF? No Grommets to keep the wire from chafing and shorting, so I am going to seal it with some silicon.. Dumb A$$es! hate shoddy workmanship

Take a close look at the pic above.. the amp is the chrome unit next to the speaker box.. mounted to the wall... yes removed all the old HK crap.. Its cheaper to do the whole thing rather than to keep on fixing stock items like the cd changer/ speakers/ head/ etc.. My head does NOT fit into the dash all the way. In fact it sticks out about an inch.. looks like hell, but I have seen spacers at wallmart for cheap that i may stick in there, but honesltly I don't really care all that much.

Ive got the worthless factory stuff currently in my truck, I have a new head unit but cant figure out which wires to use to power it from the old one. I was going to run wire and bypass the factory amps. I hate land rover stereos.
