Hello everyone. The problem I have today is my truck is leaking water all over the place. It literally just stopped raining 20 min ago and inside my truck is a bad leak. I have taken pictures of where the leak is coming from. My first thing to do is to replace the rubber moulding at the top of the sunroof...then I was going to replace the headliner. I have a replacement headliner board. Here are my questions:
1. What material is the headliner board made out of?
2. In the pictures of my headliner board, how can I repair those two rips?
3.What should I look for and what is the process to ensure no more leaks?

All sunroofs leak a little so have drain tubes to control water that gets past the seals. Probably yours are either broken where they attach to the sunroof tray, disconnected or blocked off with debris. Easy fix.

The later headliners were fabric covered foam core. Many folks simply remove the headliner, pull off the old stained fabric, clean everything up and adhere new fabric to the core. A upholstery shop can also do this for you.

I agree with previous replies. If you're going to replace the headliner, check all four of the sunroof drain tubes. If these are well connected and unobstructed, they should keep the water away from leaking in.

See pictures below. These are from my 1990 while replacing the roof.

@roverandom: it's the foam core that is torn in two different places. I was asking if the foam core was fiberglass. I was wondering if the foam core can be repaired.

Thank you for the illustrations. In the case the tubes are broken can I replace the tubes with any rubber tubing or is there a specific tube that I would have to get?

The tubes can be replaced with almost any type of hose. Hardware store or big box has it. They even have it in clear to match what is installed from LR.

I'm not sure what the molded headliner board material is made out of but it can be repaired. I used a piece of screen material and some "GOOP". The screening material will span any cracks and the GOOP does a great job of adhering to almost anything.

Yes, you can repair the headliner as described above or in similar fashion.

The drain tube outlet (that the tubes fasten to) can become broken at the corners. You can repair them with plastic expoxy. Use a small amount of silicone to seal the corners of the tray once you have access. When refitting the drian tubes I always add a hose clamp to ensure they don't come off again.

To ensure you have no more leaks you will first need to remove the Headliner Board to identifie where the water is coming from.

#1) Keep in mind your sunroof seals are only designed to reduce water flow not stop water flow.

#2) Water leaks as mentioned above come from lack of maintance to the #1) Gutter System & #2) The Drain Tubes. No were in your owners manual does it talk about preventive maintance. Your manual only talks about how to operate your sunroof.

The end of the drain tube that is below your sunroof glass is open like a garden hose but only the size of a large pencil in radius. The exit point of the Drain tube that exits the vehicle is designed to not only allow water & debris to penetrate thru it but also designed to limit the access of unwanted critters like coach roaches, lizards, crickets etc from climbing up the drain tube and invading you in the privacy of your vehicle.

The end of the drain tube that exits the vehicle is a collection point for debris to collect with years of lack of maintance , remember when it rains the water collects all the debris on the exterior of the roof and enters into your sunroof gutter system by the means of your sunroof seal.

Once the Headliner Board has been removed look on the back of the headliner board for water marks, its like a scavenger hunt, were ever you see water marks on the headliner board look up. Your looking for past evidence of water, Lime Deposit Trails, Dirt Trails are all evidence of past water or physical evidence of water as you do want to run the garden hose on the roof of the Land Rover for a good fifteen (15) Minutes. Long enough to saturate all the hard coruscations to start flowing to find your water leak.

Sometimes you many find your sunroof seal is bad enough to were it allows more water than what the drain tubes can keep up with.

If your classic has a Glass sunroof your in luck, as it uses the same sunroof seal as the
P38 Range Rover.

Hope this all helps, please feel free to ask any questions .Bill

Headliner - so just to be clear, you cannot get to the drain without at least taking some of the headliner down? Cannot be accessed from the top or from someplace after the sunroof has been opened without fooling with the headliner?

Actually if you remove the sunroof you can probably fish a stiff piece of wire into the rear drain holes and front ones to see if they are clogged, but you won't be able to see if they leak.

I think it may be easier to take down the headliner.
