Okay.. so I am at 53K and I am now on my extended warranty that I got through the dealer when I bought the truck from them, Land Rover Certified. Anyway.. I brought the truck in because I have been getting a really loud gear whine and a vibration between 70-75MPH. The dealer originally diagnosed that I need a new transfercase. I said cool.. thank God for warranty. Just got a call from them.. The warranty people what them to tear the transfer case all the way down and show them the damage. I need to commit to the labor of 8 hours should they decide not to fix anything. The deal now also says that yes, they can hear the whine, they were unable to feel the vibration that I mentioned and that the noise is pretty common or.. "right on par" with a vehicle of this year and mileage..

Okay.. a change of tune I hear.. I thought that they said before taht I needed a new transfercase.. now it might be okay??? and I have to pay the labor to prove it one way or the other?? WTF????

What recourse do I have?

Not sure how you should go about doing anything in your case, but I had a similar issue with a high pitch whine and vibration which went in and out depending on how far the accel. petal was pressed down. The sound was occuring only at speeds of about 30mph and 55mph, but not much in-between, below, or above.

They checked it out and said that I needed a new front driveshaft. This was 7 months ago, it took them 7 months to get a front driveshaft, but I finally did.

After all that the sound didnt completely go away (though it improved quite a bit) and I had my new driveshaft put in at 49400mi, I had been calling them frantically for it so I could have it put in under warentee (I never recieved any recall for it).

At least I got a brand spankin' new driveshaft :D

Don't supposed you are with in reach of another dealer? The dealer here is so good about that stuff, though I don't know how. I got a whole new radiator, even though it only had a small leak. When I took my 2000 disco in for it's 60,000 mi maintenance, the bill would have run a little over three grand but they guarenteed me that the would keep it under $1000.00. Bill was $997 and the rest was warrantied work.

I really can't see that they can do that. They should be the ones paying for the tear down and put together, since they are the ones that want it done. Anybody higher up you can talk to? :dunno:

Well.. its the warranty company the Land Rover uses that is requiring this to be done to prove it needs replacement. They even needed a copy of my 30K service to make sure I had the transfer case fluid changed.. If you do not have your service work done at the dealer, they will not warranty a claim..

Friggen joke. I am so pissed I don't even know what to do. My luck is that I will authorize them to tear it down to prove it is defective and then they will say.. nope.. sorry, it's all within spec for a vehicle with this mileage/age..

Thank god my 02 is paid off, I may end up just dumping it and buying something else with a manufacturer (dealer) warranty (non-land rover).. I've had this thing in the shop SO much to get stuff replaced, it's ridiculous and I am very anal about the truck too, VERY anal.

BTW, it used to be Eden Prairie Land Rover (Minnesota), and they sold it to Rudy Luther's Downtown Jaguar, Land Rover, Lotus.

I know how it feels, dumping money into a truck. We spent somewhere near 7 grand in parts and accessories for my husbands RRC, and when all was said and done it still need another 8 grand or so. We traded her in for the disco 1.

I can see I am blessed with a good dealer. They always seem to "convince" the warrenty company that it is their fault, not mine. Especially when I had water in my compressor that blew it out (hmmm... wonder how that got there? :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: Again, all warrentied.

My mechanic used to have a couple discos and has a lot of stuff laying around his house. Almost every time I have my truck serviced, he leaves something inside. Last time it was a cargo net to hold my tool box and blanket down, as well as two genuine leather LR off-road light covers. It helps to off-set the annoyance of another hefty labor bill, like having to replace all the lug nuts (which I also got at cost). I always make sure to bring the boys who help me out gift certificates to the restuarant I used to work at. I guess you could say we have a good working relationship. They also do trips and stuff.

02DISCO2,

Sorry to know you are having such annoying problems with the Disco.
The raquet you are describing is not on par with a DISCO of 53K miles.
I Personally would NOT pay for them taking my unit apart for warranty work.
I would escalate up the chain (of the warranty company) and p**s them all off untill someone took responsibility. That sort of nonsense is unnaceptable. :complain: Some of these warranty companies are rather disengenous.

That sound like B.S. to me. The warranty company that Land Rover uses for certified trucks is...Land Rover, isn't it? If so, then your dealership needs to suck it up and fix the problem.

When a Land Rover is bought by a dealer at the "Certified Auction" it has already been checked by Land Rover to ensure that it meets all of the criteria for a certified vehicle. When a truck is taken as a trade at a Land Rover dealership, they do the inspection (and all required repairs) in order to certify it. I'm just guessing here, but I'd bet that your dealership took your truck on trade and certified it without doing all of the required repairs or checks. That's why they don't want to do the work, because they will have to eat the cost. Either that or lie to Land Rover about doing all of the inspections and fixes, which is a sure way to get into trouble with LRNA.

Regardless, I would pull out a copy of the LR certified warranty and raise three kinds of hell. :complain: If they refuse to cooperate, go to the attorney general in your state. Nothing is more cut and dried than misrepresenting a warranty. The AG of your state starts looking into the problem and I bet they get more flexible.

The warranty I had when I bought my Disco at 55k miles was from Primus care.

They were pretty good about things and Land Rover Mission Viejo was pretty good at convincing as well.

I say, beat the F*** out of the front drive shaft then clean the dirt and mud off and bring the rig back in Flynn. This way it should look worse then if they look at it now.

My friend is having a similar situation right now with his dealer. I cant say how I am helping in his situation untill I see if it works. But, if my shenanaghans work out, I will tell you what I tried.

Peace

Warrenty companies hate people that can think.... Fight it, you'll win.......
and if not... I'll have them talk to my little friend (jk).....

The warranty company is an insurance company. No more, no less. They don't make money by paying claims. They have become more stringent in the last year, and downright stupid on occasion. Like the idiot who only authorized 1 head gasket, because only 1 was dripping, the other was only seeping. We did both anyway.
As a dealer, we have to get the customer to authorize disassembly to the point of failure. As a dealer, we do not overhaul transmissions, transfer boxes, steering boxes, and even engines fo rthe most part. The warranty companies still make up pull them down to the point of failure before they authorize replacement. The techs have to eat. We don't work for free.
As a customer, you purchased a warranty to cover mechanical failure. The warranty company has to see that failure. Once they see the failure, they'll cover it.

Do you really think the dealers have it any easier. we are screwed as bad as you are. Then when we warranty and get approval and do everything right they kick the claim back and refuse to pay for it.

Nobody likes an audit.

Its like one giant enema.
