My local mechanic told me that I need a tune - to include new spark plugs and spark plug wires. All in, he quoted me in the range of $600.

Does anyone know of a tutorial that I can follow to do this repair myself?

I did it all myself, I used basic champion plugs, their not not expensive, and I used a MSD wire set, about 50.00, I had to cut the wires and terminate the ends. It sounds hard but it's very easy. The box comes with everything you need. Just make sure you do one wire at a time or mark with tape or something.

Your mechanic is a thief, sure wouldn't use him again.
There is nothing to changing plugs and wires, buy a set of 8mm wires and a set of E-3 plugs and it will run much better.
Also read my sticky thread in the D1 section regarding a major service, bet you haven't done any of this in years.

Thanks Mike. I'm not a mechanic by any stretch, but this sounds like something I can do.

I'm in a 1995 Disco 1. I'd like to do some reading before troubling you guys with too many inane questions. Can you point me to some materials? I've heard tell of a step-by-step guide, but I don't think the one I am looking at applies to a vehicle as old as mine.

Side note - I have looked at your major service list. I haven't done it all, but I'm working my way through as money allows.

Go with the 8mm for an additional $5.

Just get the cheapest copper plugs you can find. You don't need anything fancy on a '95.
If you've never done it, I'd get a new rotor and cap. Rovafarm has about the best price on the Lucas, but you can get them (not lucas though) at NAPA, Advance, etc.

Also, as far as the service list, don't waste money on the overpriced K&N/Mobil1 oil filter. Pick up NAPA gold 1515 or Wix 51515 (about $6 at O'Reilly). The Wix air and fuel filters are good too.
The D1's like Shell Rotella T oil. It has higher ZDDP levels that the Rover flat tappet V8 engines need.

Is your's a 5-speed manual or automatic?
