:dunno: I'm new the Land Rover world. Bought a 2004 Disco SE7 three weeks ago and love it. Going skiing next weekend @ South Lake Tahoe and need advise on roof racks to tote ski gear. Recommendations?

2004 SE7 roof rack

I also have an '04 SE7 and I have checked Thule and Yakima for a rack that could bolt directly to the factory bars and have come up empty. For whatever reason there are no crossbars on my Rover so I am not sure if those racks will work. I have seen a rack at www.roversnorth.com but it is $1,000! Not sure if I want to spend that much on a rack. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I have seen quite a few here in Colorado use Yakima... There is a special tower that mounts to the factory bars, then you buy the crossbars and racks.. Yakima is what i use on my RRC

I went with the Yakima towers. The round bars allow me to roll the ski racks down allowing me to get in the garage. You might want to get your cross bars a little wider than standard. Then you can push one bar out farther so your ski rack end is right above your head rather than in the middle of the roof--makes it a whole lot easier to load skis. Standing on the tire and trying to load skis is a slippery process. You own the best ski vehicle made.

I would strongly advise against thule...... My parents have thule on their rover and hate them.. The do not stay shut and break easily..... They have been nothing but headache....... My family has been running yakima since i can remember and we had no problem with yakimas... My parents are getting rid of the thules due to the lack of reliability... But that is my personal experience...

I have both Yakima cross bars, which attach to the rails on my Disco roof, and Thule bars which sit high and mount into the rain gutters. I use the Yakimas for my ski rack and the Thules for my travel box and carrying lumber, etc. My Thule racks are tough, easy to install and work great. The only reason I have Yakima is because of their round bar--I can roll my ski racks down and drive into my garage.

I've never had a lick of trouble with the Thules.

Go to rei.com and I'm sure they'll have the info you'll need.

The ski racks attach to the cross bars. (They're also purchased separately). Yakima cross bars are round and the plastic bracket that holds the ski rack on slides over the round bar and then is tightened with two big wing nuts. I simply loosen the wing nuts that secure it and the ski rack can then be rotated. Instead of sticking straight up, I roll it back 90 degrees giving me an extra 5 inches of garage clearance. Thule bars are square so anything attached to them won't rotate. I'd have to remove the ski rack to drive my truck into the garage. With the Yakima I just flip the rack up and tighten it down. I suppose having them angled back also reduces wind drag/noise a bit.

Don't forget to take your ski rack off after ski season. Very uncool to drive around all summer with them on.
