What do you guys recommend for cleaning up oily parts and also preparing clean surfaces for new gaskets?

Depends what your cleaning, I used APC gold degreaser for my oil pan, oil intake tube, and timing cover, the rest I just wiped clean manually w/ a micro fiber rag. Be careful w/ what you use and to not let it soak to long in cleaners. I used a small wire brush, that made the job fast also for large deposites.

After you clean up the parts using a degreaser (APC, super clean, etc) spray the gasket surfaces with brake cleaner.
