Stalling landrover

Hello, my 1961 series 2A Landrover runs well with full power in 4 wheel drive, but lacks power and stalls on hills when put into 2 wheel drive. My workshop manual cannot help me diagnose the problem, does anyone have any advice on how to fix this issue?
