My indie says the starter is gone. Can someone tell me how you diagnose a bad starter? I had this one replaced for $210 about 3 years ago. Seems like they climbed under the truck with some elec leads (like a battery charger?) for the test. Said starter was gone.

Now a indie says it is gone again. What did they use and how did they check to determine that this fairly new starter is gone?

The next time this happens I would like to diagnose myself.

Thx.

If the starter motor is not that old then might be able to replace the bushes and fix it. Mine would not crank over did a bit of google search and a bloke in England sells them think his company was repair kit or something. I just gave him my vin number he sent the parts. I received the two brushes and the plunger. Was not a hard job and in the end the negative was the worn one the positive was near perfect.

Just a thought

Final outcome:

Rebuilt Bosch starter $375
Labor $150
Diagnosis $50

So about $575

Picked it up today.

Thanks for the help. Now I know how to diagnose a bad starter and will not pay anyone again to install. Too bad I could not get the core which I would have rebuilt and put on a shelf for the next time.
