Especially when cold, and after just starting, sounds like deep rubbing noise when turning the steering wheel in either direction. Sound seems more interior than exterior. Have pulled all steering covers and checked underneath, but nothing aparent.
Help! Please! its getting worse over time!

When you say you pulled all the steering covers, I assume you mean on the column and also on the double u-joint linkage to the steering box?.... Is something jammed against the steering column linkage anywhere, the draglink etc? Have you bent a steering component offroading and not noticed (very unlikely)? Is your power steering still working normally or is steering effort getting heavier? Of course, you must have checked the fluid level - is there a leak at the pump? Just trying to cover some of the bases here.

Sounds a bit like a small sea lion in Ur steering column? Mine does that too...it’s only occasional at the mo though. Some scratching and crackling too... sounds similar to electrical but its not I don’t think. Ill look into the sea lion noise today:D

Sea lion noise--pretty much describes it. (no crackeling though) Strange that cold weather vs hot weather makes such a differance. I don´t believe any thing is bent. I don't do any off roading. Power steering is working normaly, however constant hose leaks have been a problem. Could it be air in the lines?

Last time I had my power steering pump rebuilt I got that same noise - after about 6 months it went away, but about a year later, I had to replace all the seals and o-rings on the pump. I doubt that it's related, but you never know on our vehicles.

Try giving the steering shaft UJ’s (under the bonnet) a good soaking with ‘wd 40’ over a few days.
Then get some spray grease (try a cycle shop) and spray the UJ’s with that.
If it does not cure the problem at least it will extend the life.
If it does not work start with wd40 again then the grease.
This shaft is a known problem on older Disco’s, mine started to stiffen up after a few water crossings but this cured it.
