Strange Rattle - Started Yesterday Evening

Been reading the forums for years but never had to post a question. . . Unfortunately, the other postings on rattles don't seem to address my question.

First, it's a 2004 Disco II HSE7 with 145k miles.

Ok, the issue: When driving there is a rattle that sounds as though it is coming from under the hood while the gas pedal is depressed. If I let off the gas, the rattle ceases. In the garage I cannot duplicate the sound by depressing the gas pedal while stopped. So it appears that this issue occurs under load only.

Any thoughts?

What have you checked so far/ruled out?
Look at the entire exhaust system, especially the heat shields. Also have you you rebuilt or replaced your front drive shaft yet?
Mike - I haven't checked anything yet. . . Wife reported it last night and I drove it briefly this morning.

The front drive shaft has not been rebuilt since I have owned it as it has not been raised by JC's Rovers (my repair guys). Not certain if it was rebuilt before I purchased the vehicle (probably not since it was dealer maintained for Aspen resorts).

I will start checking the exhaust system - just thought that it was weird that the rattle only occured when accelator was depressed.
I had the same noise under same conditions. Turned out to be one of the heat shields that is welded to the exhaust behind the driver’s side cat.

As you can see in the picture the top weld has a hairline fracture. Drove me nuts for about 3 weeks, couldn't reproduce the sound in the garage and was only when I was slightly under load.

If you don't have 1 grease fitting on each of the 3 u-joints, it is an accident and tranny replacement waiting to happen.
Let us know what your rattle was.
Thanks all! The rattle went away. . . Weird. However, based on your advice Mike I think I should replace the front drive shaft. Looked through the forums and found this thread: Guide to replacing/rebuilding drive shafts? - Land Rover and Range Rover Forums and wondered if it is the latest, greatest explanation of doing so. . . Also, can I drive an '04 with the front drive shaft off while I work?

If your reasonably mechanical, you can re-build it yourself. Only one small trick to removing centering ball.
You can run on either driveshaft alone by engaging your cdl.
Or if you want a new and some what improved drive shaft, consider British Parts of Utha or Great basins Rovers.
Thanks Mike - I ordered the BP Utah version rather than a rebuild. They were still offering the $350 special for forum users (and that beats the repair shop estimate of $1k for rebuilding it!).
Final follow up - the rattle might have been caused by the throttle body heater starting to act up - noted that it was gunked with Dexcool and had been leaking. Replaced it this weekend while working on the Rover (and replaced all the Dexcool as well).

Might have been related to the front propeller shaft that needed replacing as well. Not sure. The old propeller shaft is for sale in the classified if anyone wants one to rebuild. http://www.landroversonly.com/forums/f16/disco-ii-front-propeller-shaft-75314/#post500970

Thanks for all the helpful advice.
t/body heater or leak will not cause a rattle, and yes, you can drive without 1 drive shaft by shifting into Hi Lock.
