Hello, my name is James and I purchased two RR in less than a month.

We liked the '90 RR we bought in January so much, that we decided to chance fate again on such an old vehicle and bought an older twin (106 VINs different). A his and hers, and just in time for St. Valentine's Day; Isn't that sweet? Glad the wife talked me out of the '96 MkII RR, I can actually work on the two I own. I must say for the most part they are a pleasure to work on.

Lesson of the week:
When you lose prime during an oil change (because you removed the oil filter before filling up with oil as you would on a Toyota, BMW, VW :dunno: ) or are rebuilding your oil pump, REPACK THE FRIGGIN' GEARS WITH VASELINE!

This is how the LR manual reads;

Engine Oil filter renewal

To avoid draining the Oil pump, it is essential that the engine is filled with the new oil to the correct level before the old oil filter is removed. It is therefore recommended that the renewal of the engine oil is completed before work on the oil filter commences.

It is important that if you take your RR to one of those "quickie lube change" places, that you instruct them that this is how you want them to do it.
Otherwise they will likely just drain the oil & remove the old filter before commencing with the new oil & filter.

The reason why the oil filter must be changed while oil is at normal levels in the sump (oil pan), either after replenishing with new oil or before the old oil has been drained, is to ensure the "vacuum" being maintained by oil (either in the sump or above the pump) doesn't drain out from the oil pump, oil pick-up or the oil cooler. (Ask me how I know, not a lesson I will soon forget.)

ok, I changed the oil when I first got my rover the 'normal' way, about 1,500 miles ago, draining the oil and changing the filter while it was empty. What, if anything, should I do now? Just change the oil again the rover way? :dunno:

Hi, my name is Eric, I am a Rover addict.

I drain my oil, then I pull my filter.
Then I fill it with new oil.
I have not noticed any ill affects.

Been doing it this way since 87,000.
152,000 miles.

Just posting my experience. I thought I could get away with the "normal" method I was use to regarding changing the oil and filter. However, after doing so my oil pressure light and check engine light came on then the valves began knocking. So when I pulled the pump, with filter still attached, the gears were bone dry. This required repacking with vaseline (bearing grease will gum up the filter, or so I was told). No problem now.

Question of the day: After pulling the oil pan and finding about 1/8 inch of gritty sludge and about 1/4 inch directly under the Pickup Screen (some imbedded in the screen) I wonder, "How often should the Oil Pickup Screen and oil pan be cleaned?"
