Total Electronic Failure - deemed "totaled"

Hey all, I have a 2011 LR4 with 162,000 miles. Had recently left the sunroof cracked and we received a large amount of rain that must have made it into the gear console.

I recently was driving back from a weekend trip when I lost all electronics inside the vehicle as well as turn signals, headlights, taillights and A/C. I pulled off the highway to try and restart the vehicle and right before shutting down lost all the safety features as well. Upon trying to restart I received the key not recognized message and the car wouldn't even try and turn over or restart. Disconnected the battery, tried to jump it with a donor vehicle with no luck. Had it towed to a local shop here that has worked on this truck extensively and after their diagnostics they came back and said the care is basically totaled.

They hooked up their diagnostics equipment with their vendor and it said 80% of the modules in the car were fried (waiting on the diagnostics report). To further diagnose they would have to disassemble the inside of the car and I'd be looking at possible $15-20,000 in work to get the car back up and working and after investing that amount of money there would be no guarantees everything would be properly sorted. A couple of questions for everyone... Does the above sound accurate? Would you tow it up to a LR dealer ~2 hours away for a second opinion? Or cut my losses, total it out and part the car? I have coverage that would pay for the balance financed as well as give me credit towards a new vehicle, but the market is crazy for used cars... Would love any direction. thanks!

It can be fixed by drying all components and applying WD40 (Water Displacement) or Electronics Cleaner. Are fuses not in place to protect any of the electronics. I have not had good experiences with inexperienced Land Rover Shops who only replace parts and not really diagnose/repair. What is it worth to you?

Most of your modules are likely not fried. One of them likely is, and since CANBUS stuff is usually daisy chained, one being fried takes down the rest of the modules on that bus. Had this issue with a Volvo I had. AWD module was fried, but it took ABS, anything ECU related, trans stuck in 4th gear & didn't know what position the selector was in (TCU comm), climate control didn't work, etc etc. Replaced the AWD controller and everything went back to normal.
This is true. A good diagnosis by a competent mechanic can give you a list of failed components.

An old thread but I am curious if the OP got their 2011 LR4 repaired. I am facing a similar problem. No electronics/displays but car will start and drive using the backup key fob location on the steering column. Dealer wants "thousands" to tear the inside of the vehicle apart. I've already done most of this but am curious which CANBUS component was eventually replaced...if any.
I did not get this repaired as insurance totaled the vehicle since everything was deemed fried through two separate mechanic inspections ranging in repair bills from $15,000-20,000, and quite frankly didn't feel super comfortable tearing the vehicle apart to trace down an electronic gremlin. The key fob also would not detect using the steering column trick and the vehicle had to be towed with a wrecker versus normal tow truck. Ended up parting ways and getting into a 2017 Discovery TD6. Hope you have better luck!
What I would like to know is how to get an insurance company to cover your car if you leave a sunroof open. Cannot imagine that would happen.
Insurance did cover it along with a GAP insurance policy through the lender. Got into a new vehicle about 2 weeks after the incident.
