G'day,
I need to rebuild the tranny in my 1974 S3 SWB 2.25 Petrol.

Anybody have a suggestion on where to get it done? I live in Bondi (Sydney).

Also, was thinking about putting in an Ashcroft hi-ratio gearbox if anyone has a used one or thoughts on those, I'd appreciate it.

I did up the box and transfer case in a series 3 myself a few years ago. It was easy though time consuming and I had some tools. Talk to someone like Four Wheel Drives in melbourne (03 9890 0509) and give them the details for mail order. I think they will do service exchange on your transfer case with higher ratio. I remember putting about $300 of bearings into the box and I had to make up the "reverse" shaft so order that as well.

The box is a pain to get out. Unless you cut the crossmember you need to pull out the seats and take it out thru the cabin. Replace the big end seal and the centre bearing for your engine while you have the box out.

Otherwise go purchase an issue of 4x4 monthly or something and find an ad for a local land rover specialist garage

Gday Mate,
I just rebuilt my series 3 gearbox and engine. It wasn't too bad, but time consuming as Ben said. I had no problems getting parts for them. I got most of mine from this place called British Offroad at the sunshine coast. I found them really good. I have to admit, a lot of swearing went on when I was working on the beast, but when you put it back together and she goes.....and amazing feeling of satisfaction indeed. One thing I did wrong when I put my engine back together was I was in that much of a rush, I put the spark leads clockwise instead of anti clockise. Not a good idea. I actually took my a while to figure it out!!! SHe actually almost went I swear.
Anyway, it is definatley a worthwhile project.
