Transmission Fluid Volume

I just changed my transmission fluid this evening following the sticky post to a T of what to do for this process. It recommended needing 6 quarts to complete the process (without filter change) and my transmission only emitted and took a little under 4, even with shifting through all gears and then refilling.

Is that ok? I'm not short-changing my tranny am I?

That's odd. I literally just finished my transmission fluid & filter change and used over 6 quarts. I used about 4 to refill the pan and another 2-2.5 quarts with the engine running until a stream began to flow out, after shifting back and forth through the gears about 4 times.
Yes, you are short changing the tranny. Did you fill it, with the engine off, reinstall the fill plug, start the engine, shift drive to reverse, put it in park and then add the additional amount need, should be 5 plus quarts.
If not don't drive it till you do.
So, i should top it back off while the engine is still running right?

Earlier I filled it up, shifted through the gears while the engine was running, then turned it off and then filled it back up... still under 4 quarts though.

I will try it with the engine running now.

Is it possible that not all of the fluid drained out...? Could it be tied up in compartments inside the tranny...? I let it drip until there was a drip every 2 seconds... so it wasn't DRY, but nearly there... was i not thorough enough?

Yes, top it off with the engine running. If you don't it will appear to be full. DO NOT STOP the engine while you are topping it off. It will all come out the fill plug if you stop the engine. So you have filled up the pan, now turn the engine on, run it through park, down to 1 and then back a couple times, then unplug the fill plug, and start filling it until it start to come out. Then put the fill plug back in, torque to 22 lbf.ft, and THEN you can turn off the engine.

If you really want to do good by your transmission, run it around for a week and then do another flush and fill to get the rest of the old fluid out, this time add a bottle of 'Lucas Transmission Fix - Stops Slip' when refilling.
