Has anyone installed the land rover genuine parts transmission service kit for the ZF4? I ordered one many months ago, but have been a little timid to take my transmission down and install the kit. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do it? Rover's North says it is a pretty easy job. Are the rumors true that if the transmission has not been serviced in a long time it is better to leave it alone? I just don't want to open up another can of worms here. Any help is appreciated.

Yes, the one with the new filter and gaskets.

The hardest part about the job is removing the frame crossmember and dropping the exhaust y-pipe. The rest is cake! JohnC suggested using a hi-lift to spread the frame apart to help remove the crossmember.

Sven is right the crossmember is a motherf***** to take out. First time i did
mine i used a 2x4 and a big f****** hammer, once i got it out i used a disc
grinder and smoothed down the both ends of the Xmem and frame rail and
coated the surfaces with Permatex Anti Sieze paste.

Saturate all the bolts with penetrant.
Unplug O2 sensors.
Drain trans fluid.
Remove crossmember ?
Unbolt swaybar and let swing down. ( D1 )
Remove exhaust Y pipe.
Remove dipstick tube , the top bolt is a bitch to reach.
Remove trans oil sump.
Remove filter ,Orings etc.

How many miles on your truck and how long has it bee since you last had it serviced??
For the most part, servicing a high mileage transmission after not being serviced for a long time can cause problems. The new fluids tend to strip to much varnish and laquer from the transmission and the next thing you know it is slipping or worse.
If it has been a really long time since the last service, you might want to just pull of 2 or 3 qts. of old fluis and replace it with new.

are you talking about the pan gasket and the filter.

cause if that is all that is needed its a breeze.

Mike, thank you for that info. My trans. has not been serviced in quite some time, as the Maint. Log in the Owners is empty, and this is one of the things on my to do list Thanks again man.
