Hello
Have played with cars plenty in my life, but never with an auto... The transmission in the auto Disco died and I obtained a second hand one and had the torque converter refurbished. Now I'm in the process of installing it and wanted to check with you guys I haven't buggered things up...

Took the replacement transmission and slide the torque converter onto the splines. Turned and pushed it a little bit until it felt like it fell nicely into place with a satisfying solid clunking sound.

Then proceeded put transmission under vehicle and jack it up to meet the engine. Managed to bring them close enough together to insert the lower bellhousing bolts on both sides. Tightened most of the way. Noticed gap between bellhousing and engine was closing, but there was 1cm gap further up due to only one bolt either side being in. Put bolts in the next holes up and tightened them - this proceeded to close the gap and mate the engine/box. During tightening of these 3 and 4 bolts, there was a loudish "clang" noise from the general area and then it became distinctly easier to tighten the 3rd and 4th bolts. At first I thought one of the bolts might have snapped. Then I decided it was probably the "locator dowels" on the bellhousing/engine interface pinging into place, or the interface between flywheel/engine and torque converter pinging into place. Either way it didn't really worry me.

But now I think about it I'm a little worried I might have done things wrong - it seems there is a process for installing the torque converter that I never took the time to learn about. Is it likely that I've stuff things up? I've got 4 of the 8 bolts in and am not keen to take the transmission back out if I can avoid it --- was quite proud of getting it in in the first place! Thought I'd seek some advice from those that know more than me (which isn't much when it comes to automatic transmissions!)

Thanks in advance!

Oh, and should I have filled the torque converter with fluid before installing? It must have weighed about 20kg when it came back from the reconditioner and have a cap to seal it that I removed before installing Sorry! I"m a complete novice!

It is very likely that you busted the ears off the front pump in the trans.

Bolt it together and see if you got it right.

Thanks for your reply... when you say bolt it together to see if you got it right -- is there some sort of test I can perform before I reassemble everything else? Or do you mean put the rest of it back together and drive it? Thanks again!
