Well guy's changed my oil on the weekend and put in Castrol GTX 20-50.
It seems to have cured the problem, no noise from the tappets. I guess the Syn/con mix I was using was to thin for my older engine. Thanks for you inputs.

I run 20w50 year around. It only gives me trouble when the temp drops to below 10F. Then we have issues.

oil pump will work overtime

to get that 20/50 sluge up. be sure that the pump is in good working order.
