ok, my shittin' viscous fan clutch just went out and dumped some antifreeze in my drive. luckily i found a new one on the web for $155US. dealer wanted $340US. wow. anyway...i have been reading and some have suggested this idiotic thing goes out approximately every five years.

my question to you very intelligent rover owners out there ... are there any alternatives that directly mount to existing waterpump, e.g. a fixed blade fan, etc.?????

thanks much for any info and all the info you've helped me with in the past! you all are great. :D

Dap has the Viscou Fan for $139.95

The D90 guys replace the viscous with an electric fan but I don't think it provides enough cooling power, you might have to go with a dual fan setup.

You might want to do a search on D-90

Good luck.

You can fix it in place but I wouldn't do that. I just replaced mine in my 90 this week, it's not a tough job at all. You can go the electric fan way as I was going to do until I got a new fan clutch for free. I would go with dual electric fans if you've got the room though.

same question, except...

I had fan clutch go out on '97 v-8 disco. thought i heard some clicking at startup and at different times. Found the fan moved back and forth about an inch or so. mechanic ordered one for me for about $150 and said it is a 45 minute job to replace the fan itself and the clutch. it appeared he went to a jc whitney source or similar. is that possible ? about to pay for it and have it put on so I need to know as well is it good to go back to the original or is it too short lived and others oare better -- is it that electric fans are not the way to go, as you need two - or what ? would it be best to do that for the truck and put two ? perhaps I missed the point. I am new at this. just love the discovery - it is to be my pet. got to feed it well !! :dunno: THANKS. HOPE IT IS OK TO ASK FOR EXPANSION ON ANSWER ?? DAN

Electric Fan Thoughts.

As most of you have probably already noticed, all V8 Powered Land Rovers, except for the 101, have a very rectangular radiator. Consequently, a large, single electric fan, whose diameter won't be larger than the radiator height, will not cover a large portion of the sides of the core. That is why Kenlowe, Pacet, and Flexolite fans, recomended for this size and heating load are dual fans. Kenlowes and Pacets are, If I remember correctly, dual 13", one being staggered slightly higher than the other. I think I recall that the Flexolite that best fits my Defender radiator is dual 12" fans, also slightly staggered.
Electric fans free up a huge amount of stolen engine power. Several suppliers make a fan controller which, rather than being on or off, modulates the fan motor speed from nothing to full, depending on what the controller is seeing for a temperature trend (i.e. rising or steady)
What has ultimately kept me from making the switch to electrics (I have decided on the Kenlowe) is the cost, which is well over $500.

electric fans v other

thanks- the electric fans then do sound like the way to go. will try to look up kenlowe 12" dual fans and tqake measurements on the 97 disco radiator. hope it does not take too long though, cause I am afraid the thing will bust and ruin the radiator or cause over heating. will check today. THANKS AGAIN.
